Pont-Farcy offers several specific ways to plan a stay: cycling routes, water activities, walking trails and historic sites. To start planning, you can choose your preferred focus. The towpath along the Vire is the 55-kilometre Voie verte between Pont-Farcy and Saint-Fromond; you can also encounter the Vire on canoe and kayak trips along river routes and through the town’s history. You can spend your time cycling, by the water or on foot, while also exploring Pont-Farcy’s historical connections.

Routes and stages around Pont-Farcy

The towpath along the Vire is a 55-kilometre Voie verte between Pont-Farcy and Saint-Fromond. Check the infrastructure conditions before setting out, as they may change. Another route is the La Vélomaritime cycle route, which runs from Pont-Farcy to Vire along small roads through the Bocage Virois. A stage from Condé-sur-Vire follows the towpath along the Vire and then reaches Pont-Farcy. There is also an official cycling route from Pont-Farcy to the Viaduc de la Souleuvre near La Ferrière-Harang. For the seventh stage of the Rando des Haras nationaux, the sections are specified: it connects Bény-Bocage with Pont-Farcy over a total of 22 kilometres, divided into sections of 10 and 12 kilometres. This gives you different details to plan with: a Voie verte, a cycling route along small roads, and a stage with two designated sections.

River activities and lake offerings

The Base des Gorges de la Vire offers various canoe and kayak trips along river routes; reservations are required. Pedal boats and stand-up paddleboarding are available on the lake at the Pont-Farcy campsite, although seasonal availability may change. This makes a difference when planning: river trips require a reservation, while you should check the dates in advance for lake activities. You can then choose the right activity depending on whether you are looking for a river trip or a seasonal offering on the lake.

Wooded hills and sunken lanes

The Gorges de la Vire between Campeaux and Pont-Farcy include wooded hills. The sunken lanes in this area are suitable for walking, offering another option alongside cycling and water activities. If you do not want to focus your trip on just one way of getting around, you can include these walking trails in your plans. The named section between Campeaux and Pont-Farcy connects the specific landscape description with the walking opportunities.

History along the Vire

The history of Pont-Farcy dates back to Gallo-Roman times. Historical connections to the Vire include the ford at Pont-Farcy, which was used, among others, by pilgrims on their way to Mont Saint-Michel. Under its historical name, Port-Farcy, the town was an important inland port for a time. The ford and the port represent different roles the river played in the town’s history: crossing the Vire and inland navigation. Another historic site is the Bailey bridge on the banks of the Vire near Pont-Farcy, along the towpath. The Bailey bridge was built from components that had been used for the artificial harbour at Arromanches after 6 June 1944. If you would like to visit the bridge, check the condition of the site before your trip.
