Planquery combines a rich historical heritage with a specific opportunity for anglers. The town’s history includes the Templar commandery of Baugy, the Église Saint-André and the Château de Planquery; at the Étangs de Planquery, you can choose from different fishing time slots. You can therefore plan your stay around either the town’s architectural and church history or a fishing session.

History and Architecture

The Château de Planquery was built in the 16th century on the ruins of an earlier fortress. Two surviving towers probably date from an early fortified structure. These details offer different perspectives on the site’s architectural history: a documented construction date in the 16th century and the probable origin of the towers. The qualification “probably” is important, since the towers’ origins are not stated with the same certainty as the date when the château was built.

The surviving loopholes and the château’s former elevated entrance point to its original defensive function. Loopholes are openings in a fortification from which the area in front could be defended. Together with the elevated entrance, these features help explain the defensive purpose as part of the site’s architectural history: they complement the historical dating with specific architectural details.

A Templar commandery with a chapel was founded in the 12th century in the present-day hamlet of Baugy; its remains are still preserved. The commandery of Baugy was located in the parish of Planquery. Separately, the chapel of the Ancienne commanderie de Beaugy in Planquery is partially listed as a historic monument. The listing order is dated 10 April 1995. The foundation date and the order therefore refer to different things: the 12th century to the commandery, and the 1995 date to the chapel’s partial listing.

The Église Saint-André de Planquery also offers a distinct historical connection. Its choir dates from the late 12th or early 13th century. This date refers to the choir, one part of the church, and does not automatically apply to all its structural elements. The church was built by Guillaume Bacon after his return from a crusade. The church therefore brings together a historical account of its construction and a date for the choir. Compared with the 16th-century château, the choir’s dating reaches back to a considerably earlier period.

Chronologically, the story runs from the commandery founded in the 12th century, through the late medieval choir, to the château built in the 16th century. These dates distinguish different periods without implying a single, continuous building history: Planquery is home to several strands of history, including the Templar commandery, the church and the château.

Fishing at the Étangs de Planquery

The Étangs de Planquery are located at Le Moulin Bacon in Planquery and consist of four ponds. You can fish there for half a day, a full day or in the evening. The location is paired with a clear choice of duration: options range from half a day to a full day, as well as an evening fishing session.

The time options can be chosen to suit your plans. Half-day and full-day fishing require different amounts of time, while the evening option is for a particular part of the day. You can fit fishing in Planquery into a shorter time slot, set aside a whole day for it or choose the evening.

Your travel plans can therefore reflect two different interests: the historical details trace different building periods and architectural features, while the ponds offer an activity with clearly defined time options. These specific themes can help you decide which aspect of Planquery matters most to you.
