Two clearly distinct themes stand out when planning a trip to Wierre-Effroy: architectural and religious history, and produce from the region. Saint-Pierre Church and the Ferme du Val offer different historical perspectives on the area’s heritage. Culinary references include cheese, ice cream, red fruits and a farmers’ market held regularly.

Saint-Pierre Church and Sainte-Godeleine

Saint-Pierre Church has Romanesque origins dating back to the 12th century. The choir and transept date from the 16th century and were built in the Flamboyant Gothic style. The church thus brings together two distinct periods: its Romanesque origins and the Gothic elements added later. In the south chapel is an altar dedicated to Sainte-Godeleine. Wierre-Effroy is also associated with a popular pilgrimage in honour of Sainte-Godeleine. The name therefore appears in two contexts: as the dedication of an altar and as part of the religious tradition associated with the town.

The Ferme du Val

Another historical highlight is the Ferme du Val. Its main building phase dates to the 16th century. A decree dated 28 October 1926 designated it a historic monument. The building phase and the date of the decree answer different questions: the former places the building’s origins in context, while the latter marks its protected status. Unlike the church, which brings together Romanesque and Gothic elements from different periods, the focus here is on the connection between the date of construction and its later protected status. If you are interested in architectural history, this distinction offers a clear way to understand the two buildings.

Cheese, ice cream and direct sales

At Les Frères Bernard, the cheeses on offer are made in the production workshops in Wierre-Effroy. Direct sales from a shop at the production site began on 18 September 2018. If you would like to include the shop in your plans, check in advance whether it is currently open.

Since 2007, La Ferm'andise has been making farm ice cream on the Côte d’Opale and producing red fruits. The business uses milk from its own cows for its ice cream. Les Bio Prés sells organic beef, poultry, lamb and eggs directly from the farm. It also holds a farmers’ market on the first Saturday of every month. These offer a range of ways to explore food production: cheese-making, farm ice cream made with milk from the farm’s own cows, and direct sales and a market.

Highlights for planning your trip

For a cultural and historical focus, you can distinguish the church’s architectural history, altar and pilgrimage from the building history and protected status of the Ferme du Val. The local produce and ways it is sold offer a different perspective on the culinary side of the area. The first Saturday of the month is a specific date to keep in mind for the farmers’ market; check whether it falls during your travel dates.
