Fresnicourt-Le-Dolmen combines archaeological heritage and architectural history with trails and outdoor activities. When looking for a hotel, you can first decide whether your trip will focus on cultural heritage, hiking or cycling. The dolmen, church and Château d’Olhain represent different historical periods, while the park, loop trails and golf course each offer something different.

Dolmen and architectural history

The Fresnicourt dolmen is said to be more than 4,000 years old. It is described as the only surviving element of a large megalithic complex that was dismantled in the 19th century. The age of the site and its later dismantling refer to two different periods in its history.

The Church of Notre-Dame-de-la-Nativité was rebuilt from 1875 to 1879 on the foundations of the former church. The dates mark the rebuilding, while the connection to the earlier church lies in the foundations that were reused.

Château d’Olhain was built around 1200 and retains its original layout and bailey. In comparison with the church, the focus here is on the approximate date of construction, while the church was rebuilt on older foundations in a specified period.

Landscape and activities

Parc Départemental d’Olhain extends across Fresnicourt-le-Dolmen, Maisnil-les-Ruitz and Rebreuve-Ranchicourt, within a 450-hectare woodland. The park offers routes for mountain biking, orienteering and Nordic walking. Each activity has a different focus: mountain biking centres on cycling, orienteering on navigation, and Nordic walking on brisk walking with poles. You can compare these activities to find the ones that suit your interests.

Parc d’Olhain is the starting point for several mountain-bike loops. The Espace VTT-FFC des collines de l’Artois is also described as the first site in Pas-de-Calais to be awarded FFC accreditation by the French Cycling Federation (FFC). If this accreditation matters to you, check its current status before making plans.

Golf d’Olhain offers another scenic highlight: its hilly course is located in the Artois hills on the edge of the state forest, with views of Château d’Olhain.

Trails and stories

Another type of route is the Route du Patois: it is 33 kilometres long, has eight stages and offers the chance to discover heritage sites, regional nature and local attractions. Unlike the walking trail to the Table des Fées, it is defined by its total length and stage structure.

The walking trail to the Table des Fées begins at the 17th-century square in Fresnicourt-le-Dolmen. It passes Château d’Olhain, the Fresnicourt dolmen and Golf d’Olhain, and partly follows the GR 127. Trail conditions may vary by season, and access conditions may change. Check both before setting out.

A local legend about the Table des Fées says that the Demoiselles blanches gather there at certain times of year to celebrate ancient rituals. Alongside the walking route, folklore and seasonal storytelling are part of the experience.
