Plieux: Château, Church and Fortified History
Accommodation in Plieux
Plieux combines a striking location with a layered architectural history. The village sits on a promontory above the Auroue Valley to the west and the Arrats Valley to the east. Historical landmarks include the remains of a gate on the Grande rue, the Château de Plieux and the Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste.
Location and Fortifications
The promontory above the two valleys provides a clear sense of place without conflating the western and eastern landscapes. On the Grande rue, the remains of the eastern gate bear witness to Plieux’s former fortifications. The gate is a historical landmark in its own right, distinct from the later buildings, and points to the village’s fortified past. This makes it possible to distinguish different aspects of the local history: the former gate and the architectural history of the Château.
The Château and Its History
The Château de Plieux was built in 1340 by the Faudoas family on the site of a castrum, or castle mound. The castrum of Plieux probably dates from the 13th century. These dates refer to different building phases: the probable dating applies to the castrum, while 1340 marks the construction of the Château. The Château is considered one of the last Gascon castles—a notable distinction in the region’s cultural heritage.
The Château’s present-day cultural use is also part of its character: it serves as a center for contemporary art exhibitions and cultural gatherings. The Fonds Jean-Paul Marcheschi is displayed there across three levels. In this way, the site brings together architectural history and contemporary art as distinct themes. Visiting arrangements may change; check the latest details if you are planning to visit an exhibition.
Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste
The Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste stands outside the village, opposite the Château de Plieux. Its location distinguishes the church from the Château and makes the relationship between the two buildings easy to understand. The church’s flanking bell tower dates from the 15th century. Its stone spire is twice as high as the church. The tower also has openings that may resemble loopholes. Taken together, the location and architecture offer several specific points of interest for considering the church as a historic building in its own right, alongside the Château.
Plieux by E-Bike
The VAE Circuit 4 offers another perspective: this electric bike route through Gascogne Lomagne passes through Plieux. If you are considering Plieux as part of an e-bike tour, the route is a useful reference point for planning your trip. It complements the historic themes with a cycling perspective, without implying that the buildings themselves are part of the route. Plieux therefore appeals both to visitors interested in culture and to those interested in a regional electric bike route.
