Two main themes stand out during a stay in Mauvezin: its architectural and museum heritage, and the landscape around the Arrats Valley and Lac de Mauvezin. The Promenade du Château combines views over the valley with an orientation panel. The museum, market hall and church offer other points of interest: collections, historic construction and ecclesiastical furnishings. At the lake, fishing and a path through a wetland add to the picture. You can therefore decide how to explore the destination based on whether you would like to focus on cultural history, architectural forms or nature.

Panoramic views of the Arrats Valley

The Promenade du Château is set on a rocky outcrop above the Arrats Valley. From here, you can enjoy panoramic views of the valley; an orientation panel complements the viewpoint. This combination makes the promenade a useful reference point if you would first like to take in Mauvezin’s landscape. Unlike a museum or historic building, this spot turns your gaze outward, towards the valley. The focus here is on the landscape, while the following sites can be explored through their collections, architectural features and furnishings.

Museum, market hall and church

The Musée des Amis de l’Archeologie et de l’Histoire has permanent collections featuring fossils, worked stones, coins, prehistoric and Gallo-Roman documents, and old agricultural and craft tools. This range extends from fossils and worked stones to historical documents and objects used in farming and crafts. There is also a collection of old photographs of Mauvezin and a themed exhibition. The different collections therefore cover a range of subjects, with natural history items, documents, tools and photographs side by side.

La Halle is another historic landmark. This covered market dates from the 14th century; stone columns support its wooden structure. Its construction is a distinctive feature, with stone and wood serving different purposes within the structure. Unlike the museum’s collections, the defining feature here is not a selection of individual objects, but the historic construction of the covered market.

The Eglise Saint-Michel also offers two clearly distinct connections to the past. Its tower dates from the 13th century and is classified as a Monument historique. The church also contains 15th-century Gothic choir stalls from the church in Barran. The tower and choir stalls can be distinguished by their respective dates; the choir stalls also have their connection to Barran. Both the building’s history and its furnishings are therefore relevant to understanding its ecclesiastical heritage.

Lake, fishing and wetland

Lac de Mauvezin is a 1.50-hectare body of water near the town. Fishing is permitted there in a second-category fishery. The Boucle verte also runs by the lake: this walking trail passes through a wetland and offers a way to explore the natural heritage of this area of the Gers. This gives you two different ways to enjoy Lac de Mauvezin: fishing in the lake and following a trail that passes through the wetland.

The landscape viewpoints also differ: at the promenade, the view takes in the Arrats Valley, while at Lac de Mauvezin the focus is on the lake, fishing and the wetland. Together with the historic sites, they offer a choice of different themes for your stay in Mauvezin, from the construction of a 14th-century market hall to a walking trail through a wetland.
