Mouchan between the Pilgrim Route and Viticulture
Accommodation in Mouchan
In Mouchan, pilgrim traditions, village history and viticulture come together as distinct themes. They are reflected in a pilgrim route, traces in the buildings and landscape, and activities related to the history and tasting of wine. This makes it possible to get to know the village through both its cultural history and its viticulture.
The Pilgrim Route and Traces of Village History
Mouchan lies on the Via Podensis Pilgrim Route, which connects Le Puy-en-Velay with Santiago de Compostela. For travellers interested in pilgrim traditions, this is a tangible historical point of reference. The pilgrim route gives Mouchan a wider regional context, while a walk through the village draws attention to its houses, lanes and buildings.
As you walk through Mouchan, you can discover stone houses and narrow lanes. Its historical features include the 12th-century Romanesque bridge. The remains of an old ditch, which once protected the village, have also been preserved. The bridge and ditch point to two different aspects: a Romanesque structure dated to a specific century, and the village’s former defensive function. Together with the houses and lanes, these traces bring the village’s history to life through a range of different features. The 12th century places the bridge in the Middle Ages.
Viticulture at the Écomusée and at Wine Tastings
The world of viticulture and wine takes centre stage at the Écomusée Les Côteaux du Moulin. The exhibition covers an area of 800 m². Almost 3,000 objects showcase the history of viticulture in Gascony over three centuries. The Écomusée thus combines a thematic exhibition with a historical perspective on the region. The size of the exhibition space and the collection offer different perspectives on viticulture.
Guided tours with commentary are available by reservation. If you plan to take one, book in advance and check the booking arrangements before your visit.
Domaine des Côteaux du Moulin offers tastings of red, white and rosé wines, as well as Armagnacs. While the Écomusée focuses on the history of viticulture, tastings are the main attraction at the Domaine. These are two distinct ways to explore the subject: a historical focus and tastings of the drinks mentioned. If you plan to attend a tasting, check the booking arrangements in advance.
La Pachère: History and Conservation
The Pachère waterfall structure was built on the order of the priory’s monks at the same time as the mill. Its origins link the structure to the priory and the history of the mill. At the same time, Pachère is a place to be protected and preserved for walkers and anglers. The historical origins of the site and the need to protect it are therefore both important aspects.
