When looking for a hotel in Firmi, you can plan your stay around local history, routes and specific nature or plant-related activities. Firmi brings together archaeological collections and a clearly dated industrial history with two long-distance routes; activities centred on medicinal plants, in turn, have different focuses. The relevant dates and conditions also play a role in planning.

Archaeology and Industrial History

The archaeological collections of Girmou are presented in an exhibition at the La Serpentine cultural centre in Firmi. They come from excavations of a Gallo-Roman villa, whose construction is dated to around 50 BC. Another key date is 24 December 1828: industrial iron and steel production began in Firmi in the mining basin with the first casting at La Forézie. The exhibition highlights archaeological finds from the area around the villa, while the first casting marks the beginning of industrial production.

Two Routes Through Firmi

The GR 65 Way of St James passes through Firmi on its way from Le Puy-en-Velay towards Decazeville and Livinhac-le-Haut. The Conques–Toulouse route also passes through Firmi; it connects the Via Arles with the route to Santiago de Compostela. The two routes can be distinguished by their different connections: for the GR 65, the direction and the places named are key, while Conques–Toulouse links the Via Arles with the Way of St James to Santiago. If you choose a route for your plans, bear these different points of reference in mind.

Geology and Biodiversity at Puy de Wolf

Puy de Wolf is a hill with a volcanic appearance; its serpentinite rock has greenish reflections. At the summit, there is an orientation table and panoramic views across the valley. Puy de Wolf is also a Natura 2000 site with rare and distinctive habitats, as well as rare and distinctive flora and fauna. Some plant species are endemic there, meaning they occur only within a limited area. Alongside its geological formation, the site is therefore also notable for its habitats and plant life.

Medicinal Plants and Guided Visits

Le Sentier des Plantes grows and processes organically certified aromatic and medicinal plants, as well as fruit, at its farm in Firmi. Guided tours take place from mid-May to mid-October on Thursdays, by reservation only. Depending on the weather, they visit the growing gardens or the processing workshop. The programme includes an introduction to the work of a paysan-herboriste (farmer-herbalist), explanations of the working methods, a product tasting and a farm shop.

Une Sorcière sur le toit offers visits by appointment to an organically managed agroforestry plot and the areas where plants are gathered at a farm in Firmi. The programme shares knowledge about the properties and uses of wild and cultivated medicinal plants, as well as the main methods used to extract their active compounds. The focuses differ: Le Sentier des Plantes centres on production, processing and seasonal tours; Une Sorcière sur le toit combines visits to agroforestry and gathering areas with knowledge about plants.

Picnics, Fishing and a Walking Break

At Plan d'eau de la Forézie, there are picnic tables and a children's playground. Fishing is permitted there year-round in a second-category fishing water. Check the local regulations before your trip. As facilities may change, check their condition before your visit.

Aire de Fonteilles is on the GR 65, in the hills above Firmi. An editorial report dated 18 February 2025 lists shelters, tables, a drinking-water fountain and dry toilets for walkers. As facilities may change, check their condition before setting out.
