Compeyre lies on the southern slope of the Causse de Sauveterre and overlooks the Tarn Valley. The village brings together a medieval centre, visible historic buildings and Côtes de Millau wine. If you are looking for a hotel, you can base your choice of location on these highlights: scenery and views, village history or wine.

Scenery, Cellars and Wine

The Esplanade de l’ancienne église offers panoramic views; the remains of the former church can also be seen there. The viewpoint brings together two aspects of the village: views across the Tarn Valley and Compeyre’s architectural history.

Nearly 200 fleurine cellars (caves à fleurines) lie beneath the houses of Compeyre. They are used to store Côtes de Millau wine, made from grapes grown on the village slopes. This closely links winegrowing with the cellars. You can sample Côtes de Millau wines locally as red, white or rosé; check current availability before your visit.

Historic Traces in the Village

Compeyre became a royal town and the main town of a bailliage in 1339. The Porte Royale du Valat can be seen in the village. The Église Saint-Vincent was partly rebuilt from 1856 to 1860 on the site of the former chapel of the Blue Penitents, which was dedicated to Saint Jerome. The gate of the former 17th-century hospital is also visible in the village. Another notable feature is a 35-metre-deep well cut into the rock. These buildings and dates offer insight into different periods of the village’s history.

Explore Compeyre on Foot

The medieval part of Compeyre is characterised by narrow, steep lanes. You can explore the village on foot at your own pace; in summer, a guided tour with a local resident is also available. As this tour is offered seasonally, check availability before your trip.

Les messagers des Fleurines is a digital, self-guided walking tour. It starts at the town hall and takes place within Compeyre. Its availability may depend on the regional park’s app. The Course d’orientation à Compeyre orienteering course has seven checkpoints in the village centre; check in advance whether it is currently available.

For more outdoor activity, Cueilleur de Sommets in Compeyre offers mountain hikes, trail running and sports coaching. Check dates and availability in advance. The different options offer different experiences: a village walk takes you to historic landmarks, while mountain hikes and trail running are sporting activities.
