Roquefort-Sur-Soulzon: Cheese Culture and Walking Trails
Accommodation in Roquefort-Sur-Soulzon
If you’re looking for a hotel in Roquefort-Sur-Soulzon, you can plan your stay around the area’s main attractions: cheese culture, local heritage and trails with scenic views. Tours of aging cellars and tastings offer a different experience from circular walks or historic sites. Before booking, consider whether you’d like to focus particularly on cheese, culture or time on the trails.
Cheese culture: cellar tours and tastings
Caves Roquefort Société offers tours of aging cellars that are still in operation. The visit ends with a tasting of three Roquefort Société cheeses. At Maison Gabriel Coulet, the visit includes a free tasting of different Roquefort varieties aged from four to 24 months, as well as sheep’s cheese. The offerings therefore differ in specific ways: at Société, the tasting is part of the cellar tour’s finale, while at Gabriel Coulet, the tasting features different aging periods and sheep’s cheese as well.
Since 1869, Maison Gabriel Coulet has maintained a family cheesemaking tradition passed down through five generations. This succession of generations gives the cheese theme a specific historical dimension and complements the tastings with a long family history.
Le Saloir is a municipal “third place” for acquiring and sharing knowledge about cheese culture and Roquefort-sur-Soulzon’s tangible and intangible local heritage. Thus, alongside cheese, the cultural focus also includes the heritage of the town.
Circular trails, the menhir and the landscape
The Sentier du Menhir is a very easy 3.4-kilometer circular trail that takes about 1.5 hours. Use this duration as a rough guide when planning and check trail conditions before setting out. The trail lies within the core zone of the Causses and Cévennes Cultural Landscape of Mediterranean Agropastoralism.
The Menhir du Soulzon is a stone more than three meters high, with two deeply engraved crosses. Its origins remain disputed, with natural, prehistoric and Christianized interpretations all proposed. This makes it possible to distinguish the stone’s visible features from the open question of how it originated.
The Sentier des Échelles and the Sentier de Trompette both offer views of the Larzac, the Tournemire basin and the village of Roquefort. If this combination of landscape and village views is what you’re looking for when choosing a trail, both routes share this feature.
The Sentier des Costes passes through an agropastoral landscape on the right bank of the Soulzon stream and offers views of the village of Roquefort on the slope of the Combalou rock. Its riverside setting and hillside location give this trail a different landscape focus from the views of Larzac and Tournemire mentioned above.
Local heritage and practical information
The 11th-century Saint-Pierre Chapel crowns the rock of the same name. The chapel is thus associated with a specific century as a historical reference point, while the menhir’s origins remain disputed.
