Palau-de-Cerdagne: Hiking and border history
Accommodation in Palau-de-Cerdagne
Panoramic views and a border landscape
From Palau-de-Cerdagne, there are panoramic views of the Sierra del Cadi. Along the right bank of the Vanéra, farms and buildings border Spain. Historic transhumance and smuggling routes also lead to Spain. The mountain views, riverbank and cross-border history are thus different facets of the area. Palau-de-Cerdagne is also a starting point for hikes to the woodland landscape of Valcebollère.
Compare hikes by distance and duration
The PR 88 Jaca de Palau is a difficult hiking route covering 16.9 kilometres; its stated duration is seven hours. The equally difficult PR 24 Le Chemin des Contrebandiers is 12 kilometres long and is listed as taking six hours. In direct comparison, the PR 24 is 4.9 kilometres shorter, and its listed duration is one hour less than that of the PR 88. This comparison gives you a concrete view of the route lengths and stated durations; however, the duration for the PR 24 is not guaranteed. Check route conditions before setting out, and also take the stated difficulty into account when planning.
Another perspective is offered by the fourth stage of the GRP Tour de Cerdagne: it runs from Osséja through Palau-de-Cerdagne and across the border to the Spanish villages of Vilallobent and Age. Unlike hikes to the woodland landscape of Valcebollère, this route focuses on a sequence of places across the border. This lets you choose between a woodland destination and a stage that passes through named places on the Spanish side.
Festivals and historical landmarks
The old mill in Palau-de-Cerdagne dates from the 12th century and was renovated in the 16th century. During the annual Bread Festival on 13 August, the mill’s granite millstones turn, and an oven from the 19th century is reopened. Mill technology and the historic oven are thus both featured at the same festival. Xicolatada takes place every year on 16 August. At this festival, 15 master chocolatiers prepare 700 litres of chocolate. The two August festivals are three days apart and have different focuses: the mill and bread on 13 August, and chocolate on 16 August. Check current festival dates and visitor arrangements before your trip.
Religious art and horse-riding activities
On the PR 24, a church in Palau-de-Cerdagne houses a 13th-century baptismal font and a Romanesque statue of the Virgin Mary from the 14th century. The Marian altarpiece in the church of Notre Dame consists of panels painted by Jaume Serra around 1370. The dates span a 13th-century baptismal font and 14th-century medieval sculpture and panel painting. These works offer tangible examples of the range of sacred art in the area.
An alternative to walking is the horse-riding service offered by Les Ecuries de la Vanéra. Riding lessons are available there for children and adults, from beginner to advanced level; pony rides are offered from the age of three. If you plan this activity, check availability before booking.
