Fenouillet: Village History, Castel Sabarda and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Fenouillet
Fenouillet is a historic village on a rocky spur at an altitude of 530 metres, located at a junction of former routes. The castle remains, the remains of the former Saint-André church and the hiking trails give a trip several specific points of interest. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Fenouillet, you can first consider whether the history of the fortifications or a hike should be the main focus of your plans.
Fortifications and Historic Traces
The remains of Castel Sabarda in Fenouillet have been listed as a historic monument since 27 October 2015. Castel Sabarda is a rare outlying fortification, remarkable for its uniformity; it complemented the surveillance system along the former border. Its protected status and its former role in this system offer two distinct points of reference for understanding the site.
At the foot of Castel Sabarda lie the remains of the former Saint-André church. A papal bull from 1011 mentions the remains of the former Saint-André church as part of the property of the Saint-Pierre de Fenouillet monastery. The history of the fortifications and an early mention in church history thus come together at this site. The year refers to the bull and its mention of the property.
The Tour Sabarda can also be visited as part of a specific section of a trail: the “Propriétés du Vicomte de Fenouillet” hiking trail passes at the foot of the tower. The tower can be reached by taking a five-minute round-trip detour. This is a specific, short time estimate for the detour, not the duration of a longer hike.
Hiking Trails and Gorges
The GR®36 route from Caudiès-de-Fenouillèdes to Bourg-Madame passes through Caudiès-de-Fenouillèdes, Fenouillet and Fosse. Along the route are the Saint-Jaume Gorges, Château de Fenouillet and Tour Sabarda. The route as described thus links several villages with natural and historic sites. If you choose your route based on the sights mentioned, you will find both gorges and fortifications along the way.
The Sentier de Fenouillet starts in Caudiès-de-Fenouillèdes. It is classified as an easy, 9 km hike, marked with GR and PR trail signs. The trail runs through the narrow Saint-Jaume Gorges for 1.3 km before crossing a small bridge. The passage through the gorges takes about 20 minutes. For planning purposes, it is helpful to distinguish between the two: the approximately 20 minutes refers to the passage through the gorges, not the entire 9 km hike.
The two hiking descriptions provide different information: for the Sentier, the total distance, difficulty rating and trail markings are specified; the GR®36 route is outlined by its course between Caudiès-de-Fenouillèdes and Bourg-Madame and the villages and sites mentioned. Trail conditions may change; check them before setting out.
