Berehove: Discover Thermal Baths and City History
Accommodation in Berehove
Berehove offers two possible focuses when planning a trip: historic buildings and thermal baths. If you are looking for a hotel, it helps to first consider which of these themes you want to shape your stay. The historic sites differ in their dates of construction and former uses; for the bathing facilities, pool types and the dimensions of the sports pool can help you make comparisons.
Historic Buildings and Former Uses
The Palace of Gábor Bethlen was built in 1629 on the site of a Dominican monastery. Today, it houses the Berehivshchyna Museum; its cellar has been home to a wine museum since 2011. Exhibits include equipment and tools used in past centuries to make wine and tend vineyards. The palace thus combines its architectural history with a glimpse into earlier vineyard work.
The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross was built in 1100 and combines Romanesque and Gothic elements. It offers a different architectural point of reference from the palace: here, the focus is on the combination of two styles, while the palace is distinguished by its construction date of 1629 and its former monastery site. Comparing the historic buildings therefore offers different points of reference for understanding them.
The Hungarian National Theatre, named after Gyula Illyés, is located in the former Oroslan Hotel. This was the city’s first hotel and was established in the 17th century. The building thus combines its former use as a hotel with its present function as a theatre, adding its own hotel history to the perspective offered by the older religious and palace buildings.
The former Hungarian National Casino was located in what is now the Zolota Pava Hotel and Restaurant at 1 Rákóczi Square. It was a meeting place for citizens with shared interests, aristocrats and educated members of society who wanted to develop their city. Balls, classical music concerts, literary evenings, lectures and debates were frequently held there. Unlike the Oroslan, the focus here is on social exchange and events as aspects of its former use.
Thermal Baths and Pool Types
The thermal pools in Berehove are supplied with highly mineralised water, whose constant temperature is stated to be 31–32 °C. Conditions may vary at individual facilities.
The summer beach at the Zhayvoronok recreation complex includes a sports pool measuring 25 × 12.5 m, a children’s pool with slides and a two-storey thermal pool. The complex also has an indoor pool. The Zakarpattia sports complex has an outdoor thermal pool.
The facilities described differ in pool type and whether they are indoors or outdoors; a specific size is also given for the sports pool. The summer beach may operate seasonally. If this facility is important to your travel plans, check its seasonal availability before your trip. This lets you consider the architectural history and the different bathing options separately when choosing the focus of your trip.
