There are also several hiking routes with specific information on distance and duration, as well as the local history museum and its collection. If you are looking for a hotel in Volovets, these different attractions can help you plan your trip: first consider whether you mainly want to hike, explore the museum collection or focus on getting there.
Compare hiking routes from Volovets
Two routes lead from Volovets through the valley of the Volivchyk River to nearby mountains. The route to Temnatyk is 9 km long and climbs to the 1,343 m-high mountain. It has an elevation gain of 844 m and takes 3 to 4 hours. The route to Plai climbs to the 1,330 m-high mountain; it is 7 km long, has an elevation gain of 830 m and takes 3 hours. For comparison, the Plai route is 2 km shorter. The elevation gains, however, are similar at 830 m and 844 m.
Another route, 11 km long, goes from Volovets via Mount Baz’ovo and back to Volovets; the starting point is listed as Yabluniv railway station. It takes 4 hours and has an elevation gain of 595 m. The three routes therefore differ in more than just their length: the listed elevation gain for the Baz’ovo route is lower than for the routes to Plai and Temnatyk. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
A section of the Transcarpathian Tourist Trail also leads to Volovets: it runs from the Uzhok Pass via the Verkhovyna watershed ridge, Mount Pikui, Bilasovytsia and the Srednii-Veretskyi Pass to Volovets railway station. The markings for this section were updated in 2019. For specific hiking plans, check current trail conditions locally.

It also contains 18 rare books dating from 1904 to 1944 and 35 handwritten chronicles about settlements, institutions, organizations and notable figures in the Volovets region. Numerous photographs and documents complete the collection. These include a range of materials: household items, religious images, printed books, handwritten records and visual documents. The collection offers a cultural attraction to complement the routes in the surrounding area when planning your trip.
Getting there and planning excursions
For travel by road, take the Kyiv–Chop highway to the traffic police post in Nyzhni Vorota. From there, follow the signs to Volovets. The railway and bus stations are also starting points for the signposted tourist trails, so they can help you find your bearings if you are planning to hike.
The nearby settlement of Podobovets is an option for skiing and snowboarding. It has ski and snowboard runs with a total length of 2,500 m. Podobovets is 12 km from Volovets railway station. If you are planning an excursion there, check in advance whether the facilities are currently operating.
