Svaliava can be explored through two distinct themes: the history of its churches and trails that connect cycling and hiking. In the Bystryi district, the wooden Church of the Archangel Michael stands on a small hill beside a road. Bystryi was once an independent village and was later incorporated into Svaliava. This former independence is part of the context for understanding the present-day district.

Churches and Local History

The first phase of construction on the Church of the Archangel Michael began in 1588. At the time, the church stood a little higher up the slope and was dedicated to Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker. The start of its construction history, its location on the slope and its original dedication are historical points of reference for this place of worship. Today, the wooden church in the Bystryi district is known as the Church of the Archangel Michael.

Svaliava is also home to the Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God. It was consecrated in 2010 by Milan, the bishop-ordinary of the Greek Catholic Eparchy of Mukachevo. The consecration of this church should be distinguished from the first construction phase of the Church of the Archangel Michael, which began in 1588.

Cycling and Hiking Routes

When choosing a route, consider the activity, the approximate distance and the course of each trail.

The “Marshrut trokh ozer” cycling route runs from the main square in Svaliava to the “Kvasnyi potik” tract in the village of Stroine; the route is about seven kilometres long.

The combined cycling and hiking route “Shliakh do dzherel” connects the wooden Sviato-Mykhailivska tserkva church in Bystryi with the “Svaliavski dzherela” tourist information point near the village of Drachyno. The route links places across the wider municipal area. The hiking trail of the same name, about three kilometres long, starts in Bystryi, passes through beech forest areas and goes by a mineral spring. It was reported as newly opened in October 2025; a report dated October 13, 2025, described it as the municipality’s first officially marked hiking trail. For detailed planning, it is advisable to check the trail’s current condition. The wooden church in Bystryi is the endpoint of the route; the hiking trail of the same name also starts in Bystryi.

In June 2026, both routes were reported to be included in the regional tourism register. Their approximate lengths alone are not the deciding factor when comparing them: the roughly seven-kilometre cycling route leads to a tract in the village of Stroine, while beech forest areas and a mineral spring are key features of the shorter hiking trail. The routes involve different activities and follow different courses. So you can first consider whether your trip is more about cycling to a named destination or walking through woodland and past a spring.
