Discover Chust: Museum, Church and Castle Hill
Accommodation in Chust
Chust offers several distinct themes for a trip: local history at the local history museum, architectural and church history at St Elizabeth’s Church, and a walk on Zamkova Hora. To the east of the town, the “Dolyna Nartsysiv” protected area adds another destination nearby. When choosing your accommodation, you can consider whether you would prefer to focus on the city’s history, a walk with views from above, or a trip to the surrounding area.
City history at the local history museum
The local history museum is in the centre of Chust and was founded in 1963 as a public museum of local history. It displays around 2,000 exhibits, including everyday objects, crockery and traditional clothing. Alongside political turning points, the collection also explores the material history of everyday life.
A gallery dedicated to Carpatho-Ukraine opened in 2004. Its historical context dates back to 1939, when Chust was the capital of the independent state of Carpatho-Ukraine. The museum’s founding history, a gallery devoted to this subject, and the city’s political role thus come together in one place.
St Elizabeth’s Church: frescoes and architecture
Old Gothic frescoes were uncovered during restoration work at St Elizabeth’s Church. They depict Saints István and László, as well as Duke Imre. These figures offer a specific point of reference if you are interested in religious imagery and historical art.
The church is built of stone and has narrow loopholes and massive stone walls with two gates. It also houses objects that have been used in the church for more than a century, including chalices, a reliquary, items used by preachers, a pulpit, oak benches and an organ. The frescoes, architecture and furnishings offer different perspectives on the site.
A walk on Zamkova Hora and the surrounding area
A path leads from the town centre towards Zamkova Hora, where the ruins of Chust Castle remain. A walk on Zamkova Hora takes in a park, the remains of an old fortress and views over the city from above. This offers an outside perspective on Chust alongside the historical themes of the museum and church. Terrain and trail conditions may change; check current conditions before setting out.
Another destination lies outside the city: the “Dolyna Nartsysiv” protected area is in the Kireschi area, four kilometres east of Chust in Zakarpattia Oblast. Since 1992, it has been part of the Carpathian Biosphere Reserve, which is part of the international UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves. This lets you add a nearby protected area to your stay without confusing it with attractions within the city.
