Ternopil Oblast offers a range of destinations: a visitor route through Kryshtaleva Cave, trails in Kremenets Mountains National Nature Park, and exhibitions and architecture in Zbarazh and Pochaiv. When looking for a hotel, it may help to first decide whether your trip will focus mainly on nature or cultural attractions. The places below differ both in their themes and in the options for planning a visit by time or route length.

Caves and outdoor trails

The visitor route through Kryshtaleva Cave is 2.5 km long and takes an hour and a half. Some sections of the cave outside the visitor route are closed to tourists to protect the cave’s microclimate and the growth and preservation of its crystals. The route and the inaccessible sections are clearly separated, so the stated duration provides a practical time guide for planning a visit.

In 2024, Kremenets Mountains National Nature Park listed ten eco-tourism routes with a total length of 33 km, as well as four cycling routes spanning more than 240 km in total. The distance figures refer to different types of routes: 33 km for the eco-tourism routes and more than 240 km for the cycling routes. The park also offers excursions to the quarries of Kremenets. Alongside its trails, the park’s program therefore includes trips to a specific destination.

The 6.2 km Bohit Trail passes through typical Medobory forest stands to Mount Bohit. At 414 m, it is the highest peak in the nature reserve and Husiatyn District. The Bohit Trail also leads to a well-preserved place of worship. Scientists believe that the statue of Zbruch Svantovit once stood there. The trail thus brings together forest, a summit and a site with a possible historical connection; the statue’s former presence there remains a hypothesis.

Architecture, exhibitions and landscape

Zbarazh Castle houses more than 35 exhibition halls, with permanent exhibitions on archaeology, ethnography, regional crafts, weapons, sacred art and numismatics, as well as an organ hall. The subjects range from archaeology and regional crafts to art and coin collecting. The castle therefore offers several cultural perspectives within one destination rather than focusing on a single exhibition theme.

The Holy Dormition Lavra of Pochaiv is a significant architectural ensemble in the centre of Pochaiv. It stands on a rocky hill on a spur of the Kremenets Mountains. The site combines a large architectural ensemble with a striking location: Pochaiv’s centre, the hill and the mountain spur are all part of its setting. For travellers interested in architecture, this offers a different focus from the exhibitions at Zbarazh Castle.

The Dniester Canyon near Zalishchyky is also listed as a tourist destination on the “Fortifications of Western Ukraine” route. It adds a landscape destination mentioned as part of this tourist route. Those weighing landscape against culture will therefore find a canyon among the named places, alongside the park trails and architectural attractions.

Travel planning and finding a hotel

Different points of comparison can help with travel planning: the cave has a visitor route with a specific length and duration; the national park offers several types of trails; and Zbarazh Castle and the Pochaiv Lavra provide cultural highlights. Choose a hotel based on the focus of your trip and check the specific details about each accommodation’s location and amenities before booking.
