If you consider historic architecture and museums when choosing a travel destination, Berezhani offers several clearly identifiable cultural and historical highlights. In the center, including the market square, examples of buildings from all four stages of the city’s development have survived to this day. This cityscape is complemented by the Town Hall, a nationally significant architectural monument, the Castle Chapel of the Holy Trinity and the Armenian Church. This makes historic buildings, collections and sacred art specific themes to explore when planning your trip.

Town Hall and Museum Collections

Berezhani Town Hall is a nationally significant architectural monument. At the end of the 20th century, it was converted into a museum. The Town Hall houses the local history museum, the book museum, the Bohdan Lepky Museum, and the Museum of Sacred Art and History of the Persecuted Church. The local history museum is on the second floor and comprises 26 exhibition halls.

The Bohdan Lepky Museum opened on August 27, 1995. Its fifth hall displays 56 original paintings from Lepky’s artistic work, mostly portraits. A 2021 description states that the Museum of Sacred Art and History of the Persecuted Church has seven halls and more than 2,300 exhibits. These include twelve old printed works and eleven carved wooden sculptures, ranging from 90 to 215 cm in height.

Castle Chapel and Armenian Church

The Castle Chapel of the Holy Trinity is part of the Sieniawski Castle complex. It preserves authentic artistic decoration dating from the 16th to the 18th century. Herman van Hutte, Heinrich Horst, Sebastian Chashek, Johann Pfister, Leonardo Marconi and Enrico Conti contributed to this decoration. Its long period of creation and the artists’ names recorded for posterity give the chapel a distinctive art-historical profile.

The Armenian Church complex is a locally significant architectural monument and represents the city’s multicultural heritage. The church was built from dressed stone in 1764, on the initiative of the local Armenian priest Deodat Horbach. It is the only surviving Armenian church in Ternopil Oblast. Its features include ornamental painting, narrative wall paintings, decorative stucco, a sacred relief of Saint Nicholas and an organ. The surviving picture of the building thus encompasses both its materials and origins, as well as several specific elements of its artistic decoration. While the Castle Chapel is distinguished by its decoration from the 16th to the 18th century, the Armenian Church brings together painting, stucco, a relief and an organ.

Tours of the Castle Complex and City Center

The Berezhani State Historical and Architectural Reserve offers a tour of the Sieniawski Castle complex that lasts one academic hour. A one-hour tour, “Walk around the Market Square,” is also available. The two formats have different focuses: one covers the castle complex, while the other is specifically about the market square.
