Monastyryska: Culture, Churches and Nature
Accommodation in Monastyryska
Monastyryska brings together ethnographic culture, churches, literary history and a botanical natural monument. An international Lemko cultural festival takes place annually in August in the nearby area. For planning your trip, both cultural sites in Monastyryska and a recurring event nearby are relevant.
Ethnographic Culture
The ethnographic museum complex “Lemkivske selo” opened on November 3, 1996. It comprises open-air exhibits, eight exhibition halls and six exhibition houses. The site therefore includes both outdoor exhibits and a range of exhibition spaces. This combination gives its ethnographic focus a distinctive character and sets it apart from a presentation featuring only one type of exhibit.
Churches and Historical Milestones
Monastyryska’s churches can be arranged chronologically by their years of construction. The Church of the Assumption of Mary dates from 1751 and was built in the 18th century at the expense of Yuzef Potocki. It was formerly a Roman Catholic church and is associated with the sculptor Johann Georg Pinsel. The Church of the Presentation of Mary dates from 1873, and the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross from 1892. These dates place the three churches between the 18th century and the late 19th century. In the case of the Church of the Assumption of Mary, its former denomination and connection to Pinsel add further historical context to the chronology.
Literary History in Monastyryska
The Olena Kysilevska Local History Museum is located in the central library of Monastyryska District. Its exhibition features manuscripts of the writer’s works, photographs, original documents, and first editions of her books “Impressions from the Road” (1910), “Shvaitsaria” (1933) and “Ukrainian Peasant at Work: How to Work in Women's Sections WOT” (1942). The dates mark first editions spanning the period from 1910 to 1942. Manuscripts, visual and documentary material are thus presented alongside published books. Unlike the ethnographic focus of “Lemkivske selo,” this collection focuses on the writer and the preservation of her works.
Botanical Natural Monument
The botanical natural monument “Monastyriski yaseny” covers 0.0200 hectares and is located at 69 Shevchenko Street in Monastyryska. It is situated next to the Church of the Most Holy Mother of God of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church. Its address, area and botanical protected status provide a specific description of this natural site; the neighboring church offers another local landmark. This distinguishes the natural monument thematically from the city’s collections and churches.
Lemko Cultural Festival in August
In the nearby area of Monastyryska, the international Lemko cultural festival “Dzvony Lemkivshchyny” takes place every August in the Bychova tract. It brings together displaced people from Lemkivshchyna, Podlachia, Nadsiannia and other regions. As a recurring event in August, the festival complements the city’s cultural offerings with an event in the nearby area. If you would like to include the festival in your travel plans, check the specific dates for the August in question.
