Valuable wetlands cover almost half of Pyriatyn National Park. The park also includes wooded islands, steppes and meadows, as well as the winding course of the Uday River. These landscapes offer contrasting features: wetlands, open areas, woodlands and a river all form part of the same national park. For trip planning, Pyriatyn is therefore a nature-focused destination with several clearly distinct landscape features.

River landscapes and trails

The Sula shapes a different river landscape in Nyzhnosulskyi National Park. It flows through meadows and reed beds, branching downstream into numerous channels that form islands and shallow-water areas. Hay meadows and pastures border wetlands along the river. The park is used for water tourism and recreational and sport fishing. If you want to focus on waterscapes, you can compare these features with Pyriatyn’s varied landscapes.

The trails also vary in scale. A regional publication from 2024 listed almost 280 kilometres of ecotourism routes in Pyriatyn National Park. One specific trail is the “Podorozh do ozera Sudevske” ecological nature trail in Nyzhnosulskyi National Park, near the village of Khudoliivka: it is three kilometres long and has nine stations along the full route; a shorter version is also possible. This gives you two different planning options: an extensive network of routes and a single nature trail with a clearly specified distance and number of stations.

Another ecological nature trail, Onishkivska in the Romanchyk area, has eight stations. There, a guide introduces visitors to the area’s history and the diversity of its flora and fauna. If you are planning this guided format, it is advisable to check current availability.

Museums, history and archaeology

Guided tours in Ukrainian and English are offered at the State Historical and Cultural Reserve “Field of the Battle of Poltava.” Historical artefacts on display include edged and firearms, paintings, portraits, icons and prints, as well as battle flags, uniforms, old books and maps. The tours and collection offer different ways to engage with a visit: through on-site interpretation and through the historical objects themselves.

The Bilsk Hillfort in Poltava Oblast is an archaeological monument of national significance. It is open to visitors, who can also see its impressive fortifications. For cultural stops, a regional visitor list from 2020 names the National Museum-Reserve of Ukrainian Pottery in Opishnia, the Vasyl Krychevsky Local History Museum in Poltava, the M. V. Gogol National Museum-Reserve and the “Field of the Battle of Poltava” reserve as four of the oblast’s five tourist attractions. In 2025, the Mykola Poshyvail Memorial Museum and Estate also opened in Opishnia.
