Poltava brings together the history of a battle, architecture, literature and halushky culture. The Museum of the History of the Battle of Poltava, historic cathedrals, the Ivan Kotliarevsky Memorial Complex and culinary themes offer different starting points for planning your trip. If you are looking for a hotel in Poltava, you can first consider whether history, museum visits or local food culture will be the focus of your stay.

Battle history and interactive insights

The Museum of the History of the Battle of Poltava opened in 1909. It tells the story of the battle between the armies of Peter I and Charles XII, which took place on 27 June 1709. The museum has nine exhibition rooms, and its collection is estimated at more than 6,000 exhibits. In 1981, the museum and the memorial complex associated with the battle were declared the state historical and cultural reserve “Field of the Battle of Poltava.”

The museum experience also includes interactive activities: devices for augmented and virtual reality let visitors follow the course of the battle on a diagram. Visitors can also try the steps involved in loading and firing a cannon. Check before your visit whether these activities are currently available.

Cathedrals and architectural history

The main structure of the Exaltation of the Cross Monastery is a brick Baroque cathedral. It was built between 1689 and 1709 at the expense of General Judge Vasyl Kochubey. The Holy Cross Cathedral has seven cylindrical domes. An observation platform is located on the third floor of the monastery’s gate tower and can be reached by stairs. Confirm before visiting whether access to the platform is currently possible.

The Dormition Cathedral is also part of the history of the Poltava Fortress: it was its center and Poltava’s first stone cathedral. The White Rotunda was built in 1909 to mark the 200th anniversary of the battle, on the site of the Podil Bastion within the old fortress. Together, these buildings reflect different periods of the city’s history, from the fortress complex to its later culture of remembrance.

Ivan Kotliarevsky: memorial site and collection

The Ivan Kotliarevsky Estate Museum is a memorial complex on the estate where Ivan Petrovych Kotliarevsky was born in 1769. The estate is listed as an immovable monument of national significance. A watercolor sketch by Taras Shevchenko served as the basis for the reconstruction, which was carried out by architect V. M. Tertyshny.

The Ivan Kotliarevsky Literary Memorial Museum preserves the poet’s handwritten archive, personal belongings, works of fine art and an extensive library. The collection includes editions from the 18th and 19th centuries, published both during his lifetime and later. The archive was donated by the St. Petersburg Public Library named after M. Saltykov-Shchedrin. Notable books in the collection include the first edition of the “Eneida” from 1798 and a rare second copy from 1808, which was in its owner’s personal library.

Halushky as a symbol of the city

The monument to Poltava’s halushky stands in Sobornyi Square. It features a large bowl containing twelve concrete halushky and a deep, ladle-shaped spoon. Both rest on a base shaped like a tabletop, wrapped in a traditional Ukrainian rushnyk. The dish is considered a culinary symbol of the city, so you will encounter it not only as food but also as the subject of a striking monument.

A halushky festival is held in Poltava every year, where visitors can try twelve varieties. Check the event dates for your chosen year of travel. The “Komora” halushky workshop offers ethnographic workshops where you can learn about the dish’s history and become a member of the “Halushky Guild.” Ask in advance whether the workshops are offered on your travel dates.

The Interactive Museum of Folk Gastronomy also explores culinary themes. A themed short play is performed during the tour, and guests can try on historical clothing. Check in advance whether tours featuring these activities are currently taking place.

Nature, history and ethnography

The Vasyl Krychevsky Museum of Local Lore presents exhibits on nature, history and ethnography. Its permanent exhibition, “Treasury,” displays notable pieces from the collection. Check before your visit whether the museum is currently open to visitors. Alongside the themes of battle and literature, Poltava thus also offers access to natural history and ethnographic collections.
