Moravský Svätý Ján: Habaner Heritage and the March Landscape
Accommodation in Moravský Svätý Ján
In Moravský Svätý Ján, Habaner history, sacred architecture and cycling connections to the March landscape offer different ways to shape your stay. The Habánsky dvor brings Habaner history to life; churches, chapels and the Kaštieľ offer further insights into the area’s architectural history. EuroVelo 13, a nature trail for cyclists and the Čeker–Čertová studňa Nature Reserve add further points of interest. When planning your trip, you can weigh up cultural history, cycling and nature.
Habánsky dvor and Habaner history
The Habaners’ arrival from Moravia in Moravský Svätý Ján is dated to the years 1540 to 1550. Habánsky dvor offers a tangible connection to this history: the farm complex has a square layout, three entrances and a small chapel in the centre. The layout makes the form of the courtyard easy to see, with the chapel at its centre.
The years 1839 and 1994 are displayed on the front of the chapel tower. Traditional Habán Hody festivities take place each September on the grounds of Habánsky dvor. If you would like to combine your trip with the festival, check the specific event dates in advance.
Churches and architectural history
The Roman Catholic Neoclassical Church of St John the Baptist was built from 1840 to 1851 on the site of an earlier Baroque church. Its architectural history thus encompasses both the Baroque predecessor and the later Neoclassical building.
In the village district of Salaš stands the Chapel of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows, an octagonal building. The Kaštieľ in Moravský Svätý Ján also displays several architectural features: originally a Baroque building dating from the mid-18th century, it is a three-storey rectangular structure with an Art Nouveau façade. Here, the Baroque origins and Art Nouveau façade describe different aspects of the same building.
KC JÁNY, located beneath the House of Culture, is part of the area’s cultural and community life. The centre includes a library, a gallery and spaces for community activities. The village’s cultural character therefore extends beyond historic buildings to include spaces used by the community.
Cycling routes and the March landscape
The Slovak section of EuroVelo 13 is 90 kilometres long. It starts in Bratislava at the Austrian border, follows the border with the Czech Republic and ends in Moravský Svätý Ján. As route conditions can change, it is advisable to check the current route before setting off.
The Náučný chodník Nivou Moravy Devín–Moravský Svätý Ján educational trail also ends in Moravský Svätý Ján. It is a self-guided, linear, year-round cycling trail that can be travelled in either direction. Its focus is on natural history, cultural history and nature conservation. The trail combines cycling with natural history, cultural history and nature conservation; EuroVelo 13’s 90-kilometre Slovak section runs from Bratislava along the Czech border to Moravský Svätý Ján.
The Čeker–Čertová studňa National Nature Reserve lies within the cadastral area of Moravský Svätý Ján. It protects natural communities in an oxbow of the March, as well as riverside vegetation. The EuroVelo 13 section runs in close contact with the flora and fauna of the March, which is considered a paradise for waterbirds. These natural features add a distinct perspective to the area’s historical attractions.
A permanent bridge over the March connects Moravský Svätý Ján with Hohenau. It replaced a pontoon bridge that had been there since 1994. If you plan to include the bridge in your trip, check its current condition in advance.
