Podbranc: Branč Castle, Starý hrad and hiking trails
Accommodation in Podbranc
Podbranc is defined by the medieval ruins of Branč Castle, nearby Starý hrad and the landscape of Brančské bradlá. If you are looking for a hotel destination with castle and landscape themes, the trails, the history of the two sites and the views in good weather offer specific points to help you make your choice.
Branč Castle and the history of Starý hrad
Starý hrad is located in Podbranč, right next to the medieval ruins of Branč Castle. The site is one of the oldest hillforts in the Záhorie region. The prehistoric settlement of Starý hrad near Branč was inhabited more than 5,000 years ago. Branč belongs to a different historical period: the castle was built in the second half of the 13th century and was part of a network of border castles intended to protect routes from Moravia to the Danube Lowland. Thus, one location brings together evidence of very early settlement and the medieval protection of important routes.
Branč Castle can be reached by car, with parking below the castle. From there, it is about a 100-metre walk; on foot from Podbranč, it takes approximately five minutes. One route description lists the castle as the starting point and continues toward the cemetery and Starý hrad. The Starý hrad–Branč educational trail is classified as an easy route. It takes approximately 40 minutes and is rated as an easy route. This makes it easy to distinguish the stated duration of the educational trail from longer hikes in the area.
Hiking and planning your time
One described hike in the Podbranč area starts in the square in front of the municipal office. It is about seven kilometres long and takes approximately two to two and a half hours without breaks. This gives you two different time estimates for planning: around 40 minutes for the educational trail and a longer timeframe for the hike, whose duration is explicitly stated as being without breaks.
The Chodník Viktora Beniaka leads from Senica via Kunovská priehrada to Podbranč, through Podbranč–Majer and Podbranč–Dolná Dolina, and onward to Branč Castle. Since 1999, the route has been followed as a tradition in November. The area around Podbranč is also considered suitable for cycling. Hiking, cycling and the historic sites therefore offer different ways to spend your time in Podbranc.
Landscape and nature
The Brančské bradlá area near Podbranč is characterised by distinctive, erosion-shaped terrain with striking elevations and rock outcrops. This terrain differs from the rest of the Myjava Hills. In good weather, views from Podbranč extend across the Little Carpathians, the Záhorie Lowland, the Myjava Hills and the Chvojnica Valley. Since the view is explicitly dependent on good weather, it is worth keeping this caveat in mind when planning your visit.
The Myjava is designated a natural monument. The larger southern section of the Rieka Myjava natural monument below Podbranč is also part of the Horný tok Myjavy European protected area in the Natura 2000 network. These protected landscapes add a natural perspective on the area to its castle and hiking themes.
Other local highlights
The original Pagáč mill has been preserved in Podbranč. There is also a collection of historic agricultural machinery belonging to Ing. Dušan Praženka. Both are local cultural and historical highlights alongside the castles.
In the settlement of Varsíkovci, there is a home distillery producing slivovitz, where tastings are available and bottles are offered for sale. Before visiting, check whether tastings and sales are currently available.
