Moravany nad Váhom: Nature Trails and History
Accommodation in Moravany Nad Váhom
Moravany nad Váhom lies in the valley of the Striebornica stream, at the western foot of the Považský Inovec mountains. Natural features, routes and historic buildings give the village its distinctive character. The Moravianska Venuša, a figurine carved from mammoth ivory during the Gravettian period, was also discovered in the area of Moravany nad Váhom. The village itself was first documented in 1348 under the name Marwan.
Natural Monument and Trails
Veľký jarok, also known as Hlboký jarok, lies on the eastern edge of Moravany nad Váhom, at the end of Hlboká Street. This erosion gully in Quaternary loess sediments is up to 20 metres deep and approximately 100 metres long. It is protected as a natural monument under the fourth level of protection; it was designated on 1 September 2004. Visitors can currently reach Veľký jarok via a turn-off from a green-marked hiking trail. Check trail conditions locally before setting out.
The Jelenie jamy educational trail was revitalised in 2025, renamed from the Moravany nad Váhom educational trail, and extended into a 12.5-kilometre circular route with 460 metres of elevation gain. It can be accessed east of the village in the Striebornica valley. Its starting point is in the Volavec locality, 300 metres beyond the Striebornica reservoir. Below Sokolie skaly, the trail passes through an area where heat-loving fauna and flora have been preserved. The circular route thus combines a defined trail length with a natural environment characterised by heat-loving species.
There is also a designated cycling route: the blue-marked cycle route 2208 starts in Moravany nad Váhom and runs via Výtoky to Nová Lehota. Its surface includes asphalt, paved paths and forest tracks.
Buildings and Local History
Kostol sv. Martina z Tours has a medieval core dating from the 14th century. The south chapel was built in 1757 on the foundations of a Romanesque church from the first half of the 13th century. Several historical periods can be distinguished in this building: the early Romanesque church, the medieval core and the later chapel. Moravany nad Váhom Manor House was originally built as a medieval complex of several independent buildings. It acquired its present appearance following a reconstruction at the end of the 16th century.
Another trace of the past is the former narrow-gauge forestry railway. The 12-kilometre railway connected Moravany nad Váhom with the Jelenie Jamy locality. Built in 1900, it was used to transport timber and people from the surrounding mountains. In the Middle Ages, a frequently used road connecting Nitra with Moravia also ran through Trhovičná lúka. This local history thus spans routes and work in the surrounding mountains, as well as sacred and aristocratic architecture.
When planning your stay, the different themes can help guide you: Veľký jarok and the trails offer nature experiences, while the church, manor house and historic transport routes provide other ways to explore the village’s history.
