Ducové: Kostolec, Rotunda and Educational Trail
Accommodation in Ducové
If you would like to combine a trip with archaeology, local history and a walking route, Ducové offers several specific points of interest. At the heart of it all is Kostolec: here you will find an early medieval manor, traces of a pre-Romanesque rotunda and the Kostolec Ducové Educational Trail. The trail begins in the centre of Ducové and leads to Kostolec. This makes it easy to include both the route and a visit to the historic site in your stay.
Walk or cycle to Kostolec
The self-guided educational trail is 1.1 kilometres long, has an elevation gain of 60 metres and takes one hour to walk. It is linear, can be walked in both directions and is designed for pedestrians. As a route that can be used year-round, it provides a clear framework for your visit; trail conditions may change, so it is advisable to check the current state of the route before setting out.
Seven stops and two shared introductory panels structure the educational trail. This means that the route itself, as well as the destination, helps you find your way around Kostolec and Ducové. The number of panels may change if the educational trail is updated, so check the signage before your trip as well.
For cycling, the yellow cycle route 8201 is another option: it starts in Ducové and climbs 1.1 kilometres to Kostolec. As with the educational trail, a length of 1.1 kilometres is given; for the walking route, a walking time of one hour and an elevation gain of 60 metres are also listed. Before setting off, check the markings and surface.
Kostolec and its archaeological traces
Kostolec is a limestone-dolomite spur between Ducové and Hubina, rising 70 to 80 metres above the Váh floodplain. The landscape provides the setting for this historic site. Kostolec is a national cultural monument and is freely accessible to the public. As conditions on site may change, it is advisable to check access again before your trip.
At Kostolec is a partially reconstructed Great Moravian manor with wooden palisades, a gate and the exposed foundations of a pre-Romanesque rotunda. Built in the 9th century, the manor is an example of an early feudal residence of the ruling class. On the site, you will encounter both reconstructed structures and the marked remains of earlier buildings.
At the Ducová Rotunda, the foundations of a church with a circular nave and a horseshoe-shaped apse were uncovered. This shape describes the church’s ground plan. Fragments of plaster with traces of painting point to an artistic fresco decoration inside. For visitors interested in architectural history, these details complement the reconstruction of the manor with the archaeological remains of a church and clues to its former decoration.
Village character and pilgrimage
The older part of Ducové also tells a story of regional building traditions. In the eastern part, on the slopes of the Inovecké predhorie foothills, the village is characterised by houses traditionally built from unfired bricks and rammed earth. This gives a different perspective on the village from the archaeological traces at Kostolec: here, the focus is on historic building materials in the residential architecture. Individual houses may not be open to the public.
Since 1990, the national pilgrimage of Saints Cyril and Methodius has been held at Kostolec every year in early July. If you would like to plan your stay around this event, check the exact dates before travelling. This gives you several options for planning your visit: the pilgrimage at the beginning of July, the archaeological evidence, or the self-guided walking route with its stated walking time.
