Accommodation in Chtelnica
Chtelnica is shaped above all by its castle complex and several historic churches and chapels. At the same time, a significant part of its cadastral area lies within the Little Carpathians Protected Landscape Area. Its cultural history and recreational spaces therefore offer different focal points for a stay.
Castle Complex, Museum and Gallery
Chtelnica Castle and its grounds are a national cultural monument (NKP 881). The protected complex includes the castle, four pavilions, a park and sculptures. The restored castle cellars house the regional museum, which documents and presents the history of the former town of Chtelnica and its surroundings.
Visitors to the museum can explore the spacious castle cellars, where large quantities of wine were once stored. In 1769, Count Erdődy had the Chapel of the Crucifixion built in the East Pavilion; it is open to museum visitors. The Malokarpatská galéria presents the work of regional artists in the North Pavilion. Its exhibition spaces span three floors, and the exhibitions change regularly.
Churches and Chapels
The Church of the Most Holy Trinity and its grounds are a national cultural monument (NKP 887). The complex comprises the church, the rectory and a cross. This artistically valuable Neoclassical church features Empire and Rococo elements. A visit therefore offers another architectural highlight alongside the castle buildings.
On a hill in the northwest of Chtelnica stands the Church of St. John the Baptist. Together with the remains of a Renaissance fortification, it has long been a landmark of the town. The church is believed to be Chtelnica’s oldest architectural and historical monument. Another historic site is the Chapel of St. Roch: residents built it between 1680 and 1688 in gratitude for the end of a plague. It stands in a mountain valley surrounded by the forests of the Little Carpathians, beside a spring of clean mountain water. Pilgrimages to the chapel have resumed.
Landscape and Recreation
A significant part of Chtelnica’s cadastral area lies within the Little Carpathians Protected Landscape Area. The Výtok recreation area includes a spring, a reservoir and the adjoining valley. The reservoir below Pálenica Hill also offers recreational opportunities for visitors from the surrounding region.
The “Poznaj Chtelnicu” educational trail runs from Chtelnica along a blue-marked cycling route to the Chtelnica reservoir, loops around it and returns along the cycling route. The route is 10 km long. If you plan to ride it, check the current route markings and trail conditions in advance.
Traditions and Local History
“Pod šable” is a centuries-old Chtelnica Carnival custom that is still alive today. In its present form, a select, trained group of young men dressed alike gathers on the market square on a Sunday afternoon, accompanied by a brass band. The custom is therefore part of local culture, distinct from the historic buildings.
Winegrowing and pottery are also part of Chtelnica’s history. Local winegrowing expanded from the 17th century onwards; the town lay on the northern edge of the Little Carpathian wine-growing region. Because of its method of production, Chtelnica pottery is a distinctive tradition in western Slovakia. These topics complement visits to the castle and churches with insights into local economic and craft history.
