Vrbové, in Slovakia’s Piešťany District, has a leaning bell tower, several historic religious buildings and connections to Móric Beňovský. If you are looking for accommodation for a visit, choose it based on its actual location and the places you plan to visit. Most importantly, guided tours and access to historic sites must be arranged at least one working day in advance and confirmed by a municipal employee. A hotel cannot replace this confirmation.

Leaning Tower and St. Martin’s Church

The cornerstone of the bell tower was laid on May 7, 1832; it was completed in 1835. After prolonged rainfall, it suddenly began to lean on October 28, 1930. The leaning tower has been a striking attraction ever since, earning Vrbové the nickname “Slovak Pisa.” The comparison refers to the lean and does not imply that the buildings or their access rules are the same.

St. Martin’s Church is the oldest historic monument in the town. Its first written mention dates from 1332 to 1337. A new single-nave stone Gothic church was probably built toward the end of the 14th century; older church records give the year 1397. At the back of the north nave is a mechanical, moving Christmas nativity scene. The medieval mention, later construction and nativity scene are different aspects of the building. Check in advance whether the nativity scene will be operating during your visit.

Synagogue and Beňovský

The synagogue was built in 1882–1883 in the Moorish style. At the time, the Jewish population made up a third of the town. The building has not been used for religious purposes since 1942. A current confirmation from the municipality is therefore required for a visit; its historical significance does not imply open access.

The manor house where Count Móric Beňovský was born dates from the second half of the 17th century. The “Beňovský 2026” and “Beňovský svet” monuments are dedicated to his life story; the latter depicts episodes from his adventurous life. The town’s historical exhibition is temporarily inaccessible because of reconstruction. If you are interested in Beňovský, check which sites are currently open to the public and whether tours are available, rather than making a firm plan to visit the exhibition.

Cycling Route and Choosing a Hotel

The nearly 18-kilometre “Zelená cesta” connects Piešťany and Vrbové and is used for recreation and cycling tourism. The stated length does not imply that bicycle rental or transfers are provided by any particular accommodation. Before setting out on a cycling trip, check the route, weather and your starting point. When booking a hotel, consider the exact address, room availability, total price and cancellation policy. The overview of the Piešťany District broadens your search; a property listed there is not necessarily in Vrbové.
