Trenčianska Teplá: Churches, Folklore and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Trenčianska Teplá
Trenčianska Teplá lies in the southeastern part of the Ilava Basin, at the foothills of the Strážovské vrchy mountains. Here, the Teplička stream emerges from the mountains, flows through the town and then joins the Váh River. The town combines this scenic setting with churches, architectural landmarks, local folklore and several cycling connections. When planning your trip, you can treat cultural history and routes as separate areas of interest.
Landscape and rail connection
TREŽ is a notable technical feature: the electric narrow-gauge railway connects the railway junction in Trenčianska Teplá with the spa town of Trenčianske Teplice. Its services include tourist passenger trips at irregular intervals, as well as lectures and cultural events. Before your visit, check whether a tourist train is running, as operating arrangements may vary.
Churches and local history
The Church of St. Matthew in Trenčianska Teplá was built in 1733 on older foundations and is a Baroque church. Its main altar dates from the late 18th century and is in the Baroque-Classical style. In Dobrá, the Roman Catholic Church of the Finding and Exaltation of the Cross, built in 1900, stands on the site of an older Baroque church.
The tower of the former church in Dobrá continues to serve as a bell tower; it houses a late Gothic bell dating from 1516. The brick tower is Classical in style, dates from the late 18th century and has a pyramidal roof. It stands on a rise in the northeastern part of the municipality. A bell tower has also been preserved in Príles, probably dating from the period of re-Catholicisation; its bell is dated 1660.
Smaller architectural remnants also tell of earlier uses. Only a very small part of the building remains of the former manor house in Príles. Of the chapel that was once housed in the manor, walls with a Gothic window have survived as part of a building remnant. On a plateau in Podhradište, visible rampart remains of a hillfort associated with the Púchov culture have been preserved.
Folklore and local customs
The Teplanský folk costume is distinguished by colourful embroidery on its sleeves and apron. Its geometric and floral patterns are joined by animal motifs such as the peacock, rooster and bird. The TEPLANKA folklore ensemble resumed its regular rehearsals in spring 2022 and continues to take part in many of the cultural events in Trenčianska Teplá. Programmes the ensemble presented based on local songs and customs included “Teplanská svadba”, “Drápanie peria” and “Dožinky”.
