Borčice: History, Manor House and Park
Accommodation in Borčice
Borčice between Landscape and Local History
Borčice lies in the Ilava Basin on a terrace above the Váh. If you are looking for hotels in Borčice, you can take different interests into account when planning your trip: the town’s early history, the Neoclassical manor house and park, the late Baroque chapel, or cycling along a section of the Vážska cyklomagistrála. You can decide which of these matters to you during your stay based on the purpose of your visit.
Historical Connections and the Manor House
The first written mention of Borčice dates to 1224 and is associated with the Benedictine Abbey of Skalka. In 1238, the place was mentioned under the name Villa Bork. Borčice belonged to the domain of Trenčín Castle and later came into the possession of several noble families. The years 1224 and 1238 refer to different historical milestones: the first written mention and the later reference to the place as Villa Bork.
The Neoclassical Kaštieľ Borčice manor house served as the seat of the Borčice nobility and is listed as a national cultural monument under NKP 702/1. The park was created beside the manor house and was once connected to a large orchard. A road divides the park into western and eastern sections. The road divides the park spatially, while its former connection to the orchard offers a different perspective on the history of the landscape.
Trees and the History of the Park
A rare Nikko fir with olive-green branches, native to Japan, grows in the park. If this plant is important to your plans, check its condition before visiting, as it may change. The linden tree in Borčice offers a different point of interest: it is believed to be over 500 years old and is described as 25 metres tall. In 1975, it was designated a protected tree for its cultural, landscape, ecological and aesthetic significance; this protection was revoked in 2020. For the fir, the focus is on its rarity, branch colour and origin; for the linden, on its age, height and former protection status.
Chapel and Services
The Chapel of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Borčice is late Baroque and was built in 1754. Inside are an altar, a crucifix and paintings from the second half of the 18th century. Holy Masses are held in the chapel. Check the current service times before visiting for Mass. The chapel thus brings together architectural history, historic furnishings and religious use.
Cycling on the Vážska cyklomagistrála
The Strečno–Borčice/Nemšová section of the Vážska cyklomagistrála runs along roads. If cycling is important to your travel plans, take this road route into account and check the current conditions before setting out, as road and cycling conditions can change.
