Discover Snina District
Accommodation in Snina District
At Kremenec, the borders of Slovakia, Poland, and Ukraine meet. This distinctive border point adds a cross-border dimension to a trip to Snina District. Other highlights range from hiking and cycling routes to old-growth forests and regional history. You can shape your stay around the experiences that interest you most.
Hiking trails and cross-border routes
Two cross-border routes were established in 2013: Veľká Ravka–Kremenec–Nová Sedlica and Wetlina–Riaba skala–Runina. There are also clearly described trail sections for hikes at Sninský kameň. The yellow-marked hiking trail from Zemplínske Hámre starts at the car park by the quarry and leads to the Tri tably saddle. From there, a red-marked trail continues to the summit plateaus of Sninský kameň. Both plateaus can be reached via iron ladders. It is worth checking current access conditions before setting out.
For local orientation, the Zemplínske Hámre Tourist Information Centre provides information about hiking and cycling trails and Poloniny National Park. It is near the quarry, at the start of the main trails to Sninský kameň and Vihorlat. Free parking is available for visitors there. As visitor services can change, it is best to check the latest information before your visit.
There are also named routes for cyclists: the Sninské Rybníky–Zemplínske Hámre connection follows the Carpathian Cycling Route 016 through the Vihorlat Mountains. At the Čierťaže signpost, this route connects with the yellow-marked cycling route 8903. This information helps distinguish the cycling options from the hiking trails described above; check route numbers and access conditions before setting out.
Forests and wildlife
The Stužica National Nature Reserve lies within the cadastral area of Nová Sedlica. It preserves extensive tracts of old-growth forest with a primeval-forest-like structure. Bears, wolves, and European bison live permanently in the reserve. The protected area around Sninský kameň is different, and is home to rare animal species. Together, these natural highlights mean that you can plan your trip to include both old-growth forest landscapes and distinctive wildlife, without treating them as a single destination.
If you would like to add another activity alongside hiking, Ranč pod Sninským kameňom offers horse riding for all ages and experience levels. Options include rides along forest paths and through meadows, with views of the Vihorlat Mountains along the way. This offers a different way to experience the landscape alongside the marked hiking and cycling routes.
Culture and architectural history
The Múzeum Zemplínske Hámre is housed in the oldest building in the municipality: a stone house dating from the early 19th century, originally used to accommodate the management of the ironworks. Its two permanent exhibitions explore different aspects of local history. One focuses on mining and ironworking in the Vihorlat Mountains. The ethnographic exhibition covers folk architecture, agriculture, crafts, and the folk costumes of the residents of the Josefsthal settlement.
The churches in Topoľa and Uličské Krivé illustrate other aspects of architectural history. At the church in Topoľa, the bell tower dates from the second half of the 17th century; the iconostasis was created in the mid-18th century and includes several icons from the 17th century. The church in Uličské Krivé has a Baroque iconostasis from the 18th century; some of its icons date from the 16th century. The comparison shows that the dates refer to different parts of the furnishings. In Snina, the Klasicistický kaštieľ was completed by Jozef Rholl in 1800.
Sninský kaštieľ offers a cultural programme of exhibitions, concerts, and other events, as well as a permanent exhibition on the region’s art and history. Since the events programme may change, check the dates before your trip. Together with the museum and churches, it makes for a cultural offering that spans industrial history, folk life, religious furnishings, and regional art history.
Plan your stay
The activities and sights mentioned here offer different points of interest; you do not need to turn them into a fixed itinerary. If you are interested in events, include their dates in your planning. It is also worth checking current access conditions and trail signs for hiking and cycling routes.
