In Vranov nad Topľou District, the landscape of the Vranovská pahorkatina hills meets the floodplains of the Ondava and Topľa rivers. The district thus brings together diverse landscapes, distinctive cultural sites and natural attractions. Veľká Domaša is a multipurpose water project in the district and is considered its most important recreational centre.

Cultural Sites and History

The Basilica of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary stands in Vranov nad Topľou. This late Gothic Roman Catholic church was built in 1580. The former Pauline monastery is attached to the basilica. Notable features include a Baroque portal and a valuable fresco inside. You can request a guided tour of the basilica from the Sever Roman Catholic parish office.

The Jewish cemetery in Vranov also tells the story of the town’s long history: it was established in the 18th century and added to the state register of cultural monuments in 1963. The Barkóczy family crypt below Čičva Castle is another historic attraction. It is open to tourists and was built in 1909 in the Neo-Romanesque style.

At the Hanušovce nad Topľou Archeopark, you can experience archaeology in the form of a living open-air museum. Five dwellings represent five periods, from prehistoric times to the early Middle Ages. Visitors can, among other things, work with a stone axe, weigh bronze or iron swords, and grind grain on a rotary quern. The specific activities on offer may vary.

The Zámutov House of Folk Traditions offers a different perspective on everyday life, with old furniture, textiles, pictures and tools from traditional rural households on display. Visits are possible at any time by prior telephone arrangement; the operators provide explanations of the exhibits. Culinary traditions are also part of the region’s character: the Hornozemplínske Folklore Festival features regional dishes and local gastronomic specialities.

Landscapes and Trails

At 1,092 metres, Šimonka is the highest point in the Slanské vrchy mountains and offers panoramic views from its summit. It can be reached from Zámutov, Hermanovce nad Topľou, Hlinné or Rudlov. Check trail conditions locally before planning your hike. Oblík can be explored via an educational trail with four stops; it is accessible from Hermanovce nad Topľou or Petrovce along yellow and blue hiking trail markings.

For a different way to get around, the Zámutovská kolejka forestry educational trail has a 2.6-kilometre paved section. It can be travelled by bicycle, inline skates, wheelchair or pushchair. As surface conditions may change, check the condition of the section before your visit.

The Oblík National Nature Reserve is part of the mountain of the same name, which is 925 metres high and lies within the cadastral area of Hermanovce nad Topľou. Grófsky Park in Tovarné contains a preserved remnant of the former park that belonged to Count Hadik-Barkóci’s castle. The original grounds were designed in the style of an English landscape garden, with paths and hunting trails. Near the park are a rest area with a pavilion and seating, as well as a replica of the count’s gate.

Plan Your Visits

At Hanušovce nad Topľou Castle, it is important to distinguish between the exhibitions: the permanent exhibitions inside the castle are closed due to renovation work, while the archaeological exhibition in the castle cellar and the Archeopark are open to visitors. Check access arrangements before your visit. Visitor guidance is also important at the Hanušovský Viaduct: it is part of an operating railway line and tourists must not cross it on foot. You can safely view and photograph it from below and from the surrounding roads and paths.

If you are looking for a hotel in Vranov nad Topľou District, first consider which places will shape your trip. For churches and local history, consider the sites mentioned in Vranov nad Topľou; the Archeopark is in Hanušovce nad Topľou, while separate starting villages are given for Šimonka and Oblík. Focus your search on the places you plan to visit and take their respective visitor arrangements into account.
