Bystré lies in the Topľa Valley, where the Podslanská and Pozdišovská hills meet the Low Beskids. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Bystré, the area’s main attractions can help you choose a destination that suits your interests: landscapes and mineral springs sit alongside a multifaceted history of churches, mills, and folklore.

Landscapes and mineral springs along the Topľa

In addition to the Topľa, the local network of waterways includes the Hermanovský potok and Šľachtinský potok streams. The Ščevica mineral spring rises below Mount Poloma, on the Topľa’s left bank; there are two spring outlets by the river. This connects the waterside landscape with a distinctive natural feature of the village.

The two Ščevica mineral springs in the Dreveňák complex can be reached via an iron suspension bridge over the Topľa. The bridge is part of the Prešov Self-Governing Region’s cycling network. For cyclists, this route offers a distinctive, clearly defined connection between the river, springs, and cycle path.

The sports- and tourism-focused Dreveňák complex includes a roadside restaurant, paved areas, football and tennis courts, the large Rodinka children’s playground, and two large pavilions. The range of facilities gives the complex a different character from the springs by the river: here, sports, play, and leisure areas come together.

Church, mills, and local history

The church in Bystré is thought to have been built in the second half of the 14th century with the involvement of the Soósovcov landowning family from Solivar. Its main altar, depicting the Coronation of the Virgin Mary, is a polychrome and gilded Late Gothic wood carving from the end of the 15th century. Polychrome refers to its multicolored decoration; the gilding and Late Gothic carving give the altar a distinctive artistic character. The church’s presumed construction date and the later date of the altar mark different periods in its history.

Watermills are also part of the village’s history. Watermills in Bystré were mentioned in the second half of the 16th century; there were probably two. In addition, the buildings of three of the five former watermills have survived. None of these mills is in operation. The early historical reference and the surviving buildings can therefore be viewed as two distinct aspects of the mills’ history.

Two cemeteries with different histories are also among the places remembered here: the new cemetery in the upper part of Bystré, near the so-called Onufrovho mlyna, still exists, while the old cemetery in the lower part of the village has disappeared over time. The synagogue in Bystré was built at the beginning of the 19th century and is already mentioned in an 1833 schematism. It is partly derelict and no longer serves its original purpose.

Folklore from Šariš and Zemplín

For many years, the Bystrančan folklore ensemble has preserved and promoted the dance, song, and musical traditions of the Šariš and Zemplín cultural regions in eastern Slovakia. Its approximately 90-minute program features folk songs, fast spinning csárdás dances, slow partner dances, recruit dances, girls’ circle dances, and polkas. It can be adapted to specific requirements.

The program features a range of tempos and dance forms: fast csárdás dances are paired with slow partner dances, while circle and recruit dances add further variety. Together with songs and polkas, they offer a glimpse into the breadth of the traditions being preserved, rather than focusing on just one type of dance. For planning your trip, this offers a different cultural highlight from the church’s architectural history or the landscape along the Topľa.
