Levoča District: Gothic, Master Paul and Nature
Accommodation in Levoča District
A striking introduction to the culture of Levoča District is the historic centre of Levoča. As an urban monument reserve, it is surrounded by relatively well-preserved city walls. The Church of St. James, a Roman Catholic parish church dating from the 14th century, is one of Slovakia’s most important religious buildings. Its late Gothic wooden main altar is 18.6 metres high and was created between 1507 and 1517 in the workshop of Master Paul of Levoča. For your travel planning, this site brings together the city’s history and a specifically dated work of late Gothic sculpture.
Churches and manor houses: different eras
Sacred architecture also shapes the townscape in Spišská Kapitula. Spišská Kapitula is located in Spišské Podhradie, in the Prešov Region and Levoča District. The Cathedral of St. Martin is a late Romanesque, three-aisled basilica with a two-towered façade; it was built between 1245 and 1275. Important remains of medieval wall paintings have been preserved inside. There is also a stone depiction of a reclining lion dating from the 13th century. The architecture, paintings and individual stone relief offer different points of interest if you are interested in architectural forms and works of art from different periods.
In Spišský Hrhov, the manor house Kaštieľ adds a different architectural note: it was built in the Neo-Baroque style with classical elements. The Neo-Baroque Chapel of St. Anne adjoins the manor house. An older Renaissance manor house in Spišský Hrhov was part of the warning system of Spišský hrad Castle, which used light signals. The town’s history thus includes both imposing architectural styles and the practical role a building could play in a historic signalling system.
Cultural programme and Master Paul
The Dni Majstra Pavla cultural festival pays tribute to Master Paul and to the generations of Levoča residents who have contributed to the city’s artistic and historical heritage. The festival includes woodcarving, painting and photography workshops, as well as presentations of craft skills by young artists and craftspeople. Tajomná Levoča is the closing event and highlight of the festival. In recent years, Tajomná Levoča events have also featured a light show in Levoča city centre.
An exhibition dedicated to Master Paul presents copies of sculptures made after original works by the Levoča woodcarver. It is scheduled to run from 14 July 2026 to 14 July 2027. Another cultural event is Levočské babie leto, an annual music festival in historic Levoča, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you would like to plan your trip around a festival, check the event dates as you make your plans.
Nature and views in Torysky
The landscape of Torysky is characterised by forests, pastures and meadows, making it suitable for peaceful walks and enjoying nature. One specific route option is the Torysky–Javorina trail: it offers views of Kráľova hoľa and leads to the Javorina–Marčulina observation tower. If you are choosing between a peaceful landscape experience and a named viewpoint, these options offer different focuses. The Resort Levočská Dolina bio swimming complex operates seasonally and consists of three parts: a pond, a swimming pool and an external biological filtration system.
