A forest trail with a shepherd’s hut and wolf’s den, a trail with seven stations about the life of Saint Martin, and a marked hiking route that takes almost four hours: in Sabinov District, a variety of trails explore the themes of nature, history and exercise. The area also offers protected landscapes, historic sites and a thermal park. Depending on your travel plans, you can choose individual attractions or dedicate your stay to different experiences.

Hiking Trails and Routes in Sabinov District

For a longer hike, consider the marked Nižný Slavkov–Bišar–Tichý Potok route. It is 13.8 kilometres long, takes a total of 3 hours and 50 minutes, and is considered easy. The distance, time and difficulty details are intended to help you plan your trip and may be revised; check the latest route information before setting out.

The Čergov Educational and Recreational Trail is a forest trail about one kilometre long. Playful and educational features introduce traditional Čergov symbols, including a shepherd’s hut and a wolf’s den. The easiest way to reach the trail is by taking the Drienica–Lysá chairlift. Experienced hikers can instead walk up the paved road. As access conditions may change seasonally, it is worth checking the latest situation before your trip.

The St. Martin Educational Trail offers a different kind of walk: its seven stations introduce visitors to the life of Saint Martin. The trail is considered easy and is suitable for all age groups. The approximate length of the Čergov trail is a useful planning guide; for the St. Martin trail, the seven stations and its theme provide orientation.

Nature Reserves and Wildlife

Several protected areas showcase the region’s natural environment in different ways. The Čergovský Minčol National Nature Reserve extends into the cadastral area of Kamenica. The private nature reserve SPR Vlčia, Slovakia’s first private nature reserve, is located in the cadastral area of Olejníkov. The Bišar Nature Reserve protects montane flower meadows where the rare fire lily (Lilium bulbiferum) grows.

The ponds of Uzovský Šalgov are also important for wildlife: they are among the significant bodies of water in northern Šariš and are used during bird migration and for nesting. A nature trail circles the ponds and provides information about their history and technical features, as well as the animals and plants found there. The ponds are also used for controlled fishing.

Culture, History and Places to Explore

In Sabinov, 30 townhouses around Námestie slobody are protected historic buildings. Sabinov Town Days, which include the Market of Sabinov, take place every year in June. Individual programme items may vary; if you are planning your trip around the event, check the dates and programme for the relevant year. On 19 May 2026, the town officially took over the completed “CYKLOCHODNÍK HRADOBNÁ ULIČKA SABINOV” project. The southern edge of the central heritage zone underwent extensive revitalisation as part of the project.

Elements of folk architecture and traditional crafts are still alive in Brezovica. In Ľutina, the pilgrimage complex includes chapels, an open-air museum of wooden churches, and a wooden church with an observation tower. At one location, the museum displays replicas of wooden churches from Slovakia and neighbouring border regions. Culture enthusiasts will find both an architectural theme and insights into regional craft traditions.

Kamenica Castle stands on a high limestone cliff above the village. Built in the 13th century, it was probably used as a royal hunting castle. A well-signposted footpath leads uphill from Kamenica, with information boards introducing the history and nature of the village and the castle hill. A less strenuous alternative is the yellow-marked route from Lúčky via Potoky. Hanigovský Castle is also located above a village: it stands above Hanigovce on a spur of the Čergov Mountains and can be reached via signposted routes from Hanigovce and Ľutina. Trail conditions may change, so take the latest information into account when planning your trip.
