Medzilaborce District: Trails, Churches and History
Accommodation in Medzilaborce District
In Medzilaborce District, hiking routes, cycling trails and cultural sites lead to a wide range of discoveries. A well-defined example is the KAMJANA educational trail: it is 3.4 kilometres long, has seven stops and takes about an hour and a half. The route starts at the Medzilaborce municipal office and ends at Čertov kameň. This gives you both an approximate time estimate and clearly identified starting and ending points for planning.
Hiking and cycling in different places
Kalinov also offers different seasonal options: in summer, you can hike and cycle there independently, while cross-country skiing is an option in winter. The KAMJANA educational trail and activities in Kalinov thus provide different starting points for planning a stay, without requiring you to commit to a single season or a single way of getting around.
There are two cycling connections for longer distances. The Carpathian Cycle Route begins in Čertižné and continues via Habura and Medzilaborce, then through Ňagov, Čabalovce, Výrava, Svetlice, Snina and Ubľa. The 170-kilometre Medzilaborce–Komancza cycling route runs via the Palota–Radoszyce border crossing. The named places and border crossing give the two routes different geographical contexts; a total distance is also specified for the second. When planning, you can therefore distinguish between a route with a stated distance and a connection whose sequence of places is described in greater detail.
Medzilaborce itself lies at an elevation of 326 metres at the confluence of the Laborec and Vydraňka rivers, in the Laborec Highlands region below the Low Beskids. The natural surroundings of the town are suitable for hiking. This townscape is a distinct point of reference within the district; the cycling routes and leisure options described also extend to other places.
Churches, monastery and regional history
Medzilaborce has two churches with different architectural associations. The Orthodox Church of the Holy Spirit was built in 1949 in the Old Russian Renaissance style. The Greek Catholic Church of St Basil the Great, by contrast, dates from the late 18th century and is in the Classical style. Their different dates and style designations make the two religious buildings notable stops for anyone interested in architecture.
Another cultural stop is the Miniature Village in Medzilaborce. It displays handcrafted replicas of Rusyn houses from the surrounding villages. It can only be visited accompanied by a staff member; find out in advance how to arrange a visit. Medzilaborce is also home to a museum described as the first museum in Europe to bear Andy Warhol's name.
The Monastery of the Holy Spirit stands in Krásny Brod. It is considered the oldest pilgrimage site in the present-day Greek Catholic Eparchy of Prešov and is among Slovakia's oldest and most significant monasteries. The Basilian monastery was destroyed three times over the course of its history and rebuilt each time. In Kalinov, a T-34 tank on a stone plinth commemorates the Soviet tank troops.
Landscape and protected areas
The Východné Karpaty Protected Landscape Area lies in northeastern Slovakia, within the area of Medzilaborce District, and forms the setting for Poloniny National Park. The Palotská jedlina National Nature Reserve lies within this protected landscape area. It is assigned to Zone A, the fifth level of protection. These protected-area designations give nature enthusiasts a concrete insight into the region's landscape classification.
When choosing your stay, you can therefore first consider which themes you want to shape your trip: a manageable educational trail with a stated duration, seasonal activities in Kalinov, longer cycling connections, or cultural and architectural history across several places. Medzilaborce offers both practical guidance for an outing and churches, a museum and the Miniature Village as distinct cultural points of interest. Those particularly interested in nature will find named protected areas in the region in Východné Karpaty and Palotská jedlina.
