Medzilaborce: Rusyn Culture, Churches and Nature
Accommodation in Medzilaborce
Medzilaborce lies at the confluence of the Laborec and Vydraňka rivers in the Laborecká vrchovina, below the ridge of the Low Beskids. The town combines the history of Rusyn villages with church architecture and trails in the surrounding landscape. When planning your stay, you can give different weight to cultural attractions and outdoor activities.
Experience the History of Rusyn Villages
The Miniskanzen in Medzilaborce features handmade models of Rusyn houses from surrounding villages. The site conveys the history of a Rusyn village, bringing house models and village history together. Visits are only possible accompanied by a staff member, so arrange the details of your visit in advance. This clearly distinguishes the attraction from the town’s churches: the Miniskanzen focuses on the depiction of a Rusyn village, while the churches have their own cultural significance through their architecture, furnishings and construction history.
Churches and Their History
With its unique architecture, the Orthodox Church of the Holy Spirit is a landmark of Medzilaborce. Inside is a composition of 350 icons covering an area of about 1,600 square metres. The architecture and icon composition offer different cultural points of reference: the building’s exterior and the large-scale interior decoration.
The Greek Catholic Church of St. Basil the Great is one of the oldest monuments in Medzilaborce. The Roman Catholic Church of the Virgin Mary was built in 1903; in front of it stands a Lourdes grotto, which was solemnly blessed in 2002. These dates distinguish the two sites: the year of construction is recorded for the Church of the Virgin Mary, and the year of the grotto’s blessing for the grotto.
Landscape and Activities
The Eastern Carpathians Protected Landscape Area is headquartered in Medzilaborce and is Slovakia’s easternmost protected landscape area. The area’s natural conditions are suitable for hiking, cycling, cross-country skiing, downhill skiing and other activities. Conditions and facilities may vary by season, so plan your activities around the time of your visit.
Two Routes with Different Points of Interest
The forest nature trail in Lesopark Kamjana starts at the cultural and sports complex on Mierova Street. The walk takes about three hours and is suitable for individual, family and school educational trips. The route reaches Kameň, at 433 metres, with its distinctive rock formation known as Čertov kameň. With an approximate duration, an educational focus and a named destination, the nature trail offers several specific points to help you plan your day.
The “Vydraňským chotárom” route passes through Vydraň, now a district of Medzilaborce, to the Slovak-Polish border ridge. Along the way, it offers views of Medzilaborce, the Laborecká vrchovina, the Vihorlat Mountains and the Slanské vrchy. By comparison, the forest nature trail is defined by its approximate duration and destination, while “Vydraňským chotárom” is distinguished by its route to the border ridge and its views. This allows you to choose between the two walks according to your interests.
June Festival
The Festival of Culture and Sport takes place in Medzilaborce every year in June. If you’d like to plan your trip around it, check the dates and programme for the relevant year.
