Smilno brings together historic religious buildings, local traditions, and a landscape shaped by fields, meadows, and forests. The Church of St. Stephen the King is the oldest building in the village. The pilgrimage site of Stolček Panny Márie and the chapel of the Virgin Mary, which stands in a secluded location, also offer insight into the village’s religious history.

Church and Chapel

The Late Paleogothic Church of St. Stephen the King was built at the end of the 13th century. It was remodeled in the Baroque style after a fire. Features preserved from the original church include a 15th-century Gothic window on the east side of the chancel, historic furnishings such as a bell and an altar, and a walled-up Gothic mascaron. The building thus combines an early construction date with later alterations and preserved historic elements.

The Chapel of the Virgin Mary is located in a secluded spot behind the village. This rustic, Neoclassical building dates from 1885. A 2021 annual report mentions a Mass celebrated each year on June 29. The village history also describes the continuing tradition of residents coming to the chapel on the feast day of Saints Peter and Paul, when services are held there. If you would like to plan your visit around a service, confirm the date locally in advance.

Stolček Panny Márie is an important pilgrimage site for the residents of Smilno, located in the forest on Smilniansky vrch. From the cemetery side, a field path leads first, followed by a forest path up to the hill. Surface conditions may vary. From a point at Stolček, the view extends to the Tatras in clear weather.

Landscape and Nature

Arable land, permanent grassland, and forest communities shape the landscape of Smilno. In the direction of Zborov are foxtail floodplain meadows, as well as mesophilic pastures and grazed meadows. These habitats are considered to be of national importance. Smilno also lies on a bird migration corridor that runs from Vranov nad Topľou through Smilno and Zborov to Poland.

Seasonal foraging in the surrounding area includes mushrooms, forest berries, other fruits, and herbs. Two relatively large ponds are suitable for fishing; check local fishing regulations before using the ponds for this purpose. These natural and landscape features represent different aspects of the area: grassland and forest, as well as bodies of water and habitats along the bird migration corridor.

Routes and Things to Do

Bicycle signs and information boards have been installed in Smilno for cyclists. The cycle route through Zverník Forest is separate from these; it includes a gentle climb that is considered not difficult. As route conditions can change with the seasons, it is advisable to check the latest information before setting out.

The paths to Stolček also provide a different point of orientation from the cycling routes: the described access starts on the cemetery side and follows field and forest paths to the hill. If you are interested in the viewpoint, bear in mind that visibility of the Tatras depends on the weather. This allows you to consider the landscape, route, and viewpoint as distinct parts of a stay in Smilno, rather than treating them as a single route.
