Fričkovce: Cultural History and Trails in the Čergov Mountains
Accommodation in Fričkovce
Fričkovce combines local history with opportunities for cultural activities, hiking and winter pursuits. The village lies in the Bartošovská Basin, at the eastern foot of the Čergov Mountains. If you are looking for a hotel, you can start by considering whether you want to devote your stay mainly to history, hiking or winter sports.
Churches and a historic cellar
Fričkovce was founded in the first half of the 14th century on the estate of the noble Perényi family. The earliest written reference to the village dates from 1427. The Roman Catholic Church of St. Martin came later: it was built in 1822, replacing an earlier wooden church. The church is on Hlavná Street, in the upper part of Fričkovce.
Another historic structure is the cellar in the northern part of the village. This stone, vaulted structure dates from the 17th to 18th centuries and is listed as a national cultural monument. It measures 22 × 4 metres inside. These dimensions give a clear sense of its elongated shape; its construction and age set it apart from the history of the churches.
The new church in Fričkovce was built in a modern style with a distinctive tower. Archbishop Alojz Tkáč consecrated it on 28 June 1997. Together with the Church of St. Martin, whose predecessor was made of wood, it represents a more recent layer of the village’s history.
Hiking and winter sports in the Čergov Mountains
The ski area is northwest of Fričkovce, at an elevation of 580 to 610 metres above sea level. It is especially suitable for beginners and families with children. In addition to daytime operation, night skiing is also available; this may depend on winter conditions. There is a free car park by the ski area, up to 50 metres away. As local regulations may change, it is worth checking the parking arrangements before setting off.
A yellow-marked hiking trail leads from Fričkovce to Chata Čergov. The route is 4.5 kilometres long and takes about an hour and a half on foot. The walking time is an estimate. Check the trail markers and local conditions. The hiking trails in the Čergov Mountains near Fričkovce are also suitable for cycling.
Several cross-country ski routes to the Čergov Mountains can be reached from Fričkovce. Whether they can be used in practice depends on snow conditions. If you are planning winter activities, take local conditions into account. By contrast, the hike to Chata Čergov offers a specific distance and approximate walking time to help you plan your day.
A 4.5-kilometre educational hiking trail from the centre of Fričkovce to the St. Florian memorial site in the Čergov Mountains was described in 2017. The memorial site dedicated to St. Florian was built in 2001. Before setting out, check its current condition and access locally, as the information about the educational trail dates from 2017.
Pilgrimage site and viewpoint
The summit of Mlynská hora is a pilgrimage site where believers pray the Stations of the Cross. Another viewpoint is the spot where the cross on Mlynská hora was erected: from there, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the surrounding villages. Alongside local history, religious tradition and the landscape offer different themes for your trip to Fričkovce.
