Mineral Water and Spa Treatments
The mineral water is naturally therapeutic and weakly to moderately mineralized. It is a bicarbonate-chloride water containing sodium and iron, carbonated, cold and hypotonic; it also has an elevated boric acid content. The mineral waters are used primarily for drinking cures, mineral baths and inhalations. Thus, the spa experience ranges from drinking the water to treatments in the bath and by inhalation.
History and Exhibitions
The first written mention of Bardejovské Kúpele dates from 1247. Regular spa treatments began in the 15th century. The two dates mark different milestones: the early written mention and the beginning of regular spa treatments. Sisi stayed in Bardejovské Kúpele from 1 July 1895 to 22 July 1895.
The Muzeálny apartmán Sisi museum is located on the ground floor of the Alžbeta spa house. Access conditions may change; check the current regulations before planning a visit. Another exhibition, “Bardejovské Kúpele – Oasis of Peace and Health,” covers the development of the town from its first written mention to the present day in four exhibition halls. This lets you combine historical context with a visit to a specific museum.
Educational Trails, Viewpoints and Hikes
The Sisi educational trail has seven stops, is 2.3 kilometers long and takes about 45 minutes at a leisurely pace. The Čierna mláka forest educational trail offers a different route format: it is open year-round, self-guided, and starts at the Nad jazierkom location. Its three circular routes are 1.9, 3.7 and 3.9 kilometers long. While the Sisi trail gives an approximate walking time, at Čierna mláka you can choose from three signposted route lengths.
Kamenná hora lookout tower can be reached from the center of Bardejovské Kúpele in no more than 20 minutes. A red-marked hiking trail connects Bardejovské Kúpele with Bardejov. The red-marked route to Stebnícka Magura starts at the outdoor swimming pool and leads to the summit in about two hours. Compared with the approximately 45-minute Sisi educational trail, this is a considerably longer time commitment for a hike.
The area around Stebnícka Magura is designated a national nature reserve because of its old-growth forest; the highest protection level, 5, applies there. Check the applicable regulations before taking part in activities. The protected-area designation applies to the area around Stebnícka Magura and not automatically to the other trails mentioned.
