Kamenný Most combines a rich local history with protected habitats and a described cycling route. For planning your trip, the I/76 road and the railway station in the town centre also offer clear reference points. You can decide whether cultural history, landscape or cycling should be the focus of your stay.

Getting your bearings and arriving

The I/76 road runs for 4.5 kilometres through Kamenný Most. It connects Štúrovo, Kamenný Most, Želiezovce, Kalná nad Hronom and Hronský Beňadik. These places give an overview of the route of this road connection.

Kamenný Most railway station is in the town centre, on the electrified, single-track railway line 152 between Štúrovo, Želiezovce and Levice. If you are planning a train journey, it is worth checking the current timetable.

Landscape and protected areas

The Kamenínske slaniská protected area also includes the cadastral territory of Kamenný Most. Its protected habitats include inland salt flats and salt meadows, as well as Pannonian salt steppes and salt soils. The landscape here is therefore also shaped by habitats whose names refer to salt and inland areas.

Starý vrch is also located in the cadastral territory of Kamenný Most. The protected area includes drought-tolerant grassland and herb communities, as well as shrub stands on calcareous ground and Pannonian grasslands on loess. The Dolný tok Hrona protected area also includes the cadastral territory. Its floodplain habitats include floodplain meadows and softwood and hardwood floodplain forests.

At 251 metres, Kékítő is the highest point in the municipality. It offers views of the village and the wider surroundings. The elevation also locates this viewpoint within the municipal territory.

Archaeology, church and tradition

Archaeological evidence in Kamenný Most includes a hoard of bronzes from the Late Bronze Age, as well as settlements and cremation burials from several periods. These include the Bronze Age, the Hallstatt and La Tène periods, the Roman-Barbarian period and the Slavic Great Moravian period. The sites are concentrated mainly on slightly elevated dunes along the left edge of the Hron floodplain.

Near the Hron, two lines of ditches flank a rampart. It is known as the “spečený val” and probably dates from Roman times. Both the name and the uncertain dating are part of this archaeological landscape feature.

The single-nave Baroque Church of St. Maurice (Kostol sv. Maurícia) was built in 1746. Its tower was renovated in 1957; the interior paintings are by E. Massányi and were completed in 1959. The construction, tower renovation and interior paintings thus mark three different points in the church’s history.

The expression “kurtaszoknya” means short skirts. A present-day recurring cultural event is the programme organised annually by the municipality together with local organisations. This includes wine tastings.

Cycling in Kamenný Most

The “Južným regiónom” cycling route passes through Kamenný Most and then continues along field tracks near the agricultural cooperative. It is almost 100 kilometres long, intended for MTB bikes and classified as an easy leisure route. The surfaces along the field tracks may vary locally; check the condition of the route before setting off.
