Strekov: Vineyards, Wine Festivals and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Strekov
Strekov combines winegrowing and food culture with a protected wetland and sites of cultural and historical interest. Visitors wishing to plan their trip around culinary interests will find a range of options here: vineyards and cellars, seasonal tastings, and a festival celebrating traditional Lenten dishes. Nature and cultural heritage also give the town its distinctive character.
Vineyards, Cellars and Tastings
Strekov is reported to have 300 hectares of vineyards. Grape growing and winemaking have a long tradition among the town’s families. In the Strekov wine-growing region, vineyards lie on southwest-facing slopes at elevations of 200 to 240 metres. The region includes wine-growing communities from Mužla to Dvory nad Žitavou. In Strekov, calcareous clay-loam soils and particular microclimatic conditions are considered especially suitable for growing high-quality grapevines.
The Strekovský vínny festival has been held every year in July since 2008. The two-day event offers tastings of local and international wines among vineyards and cellars. If you are planning your trip around the festival, check the specific dates. A tour takes visitors through 180 cellars arranged in five rows among the vineyards. This offers two distinct ways to experience wine culture: at the festival, tastings and the event programme shape the visit; on the tour, the rows of cellars among the vineyards take centre stage.
Kasnyik Family Winery can arrange wine tastings in a family setting on request, along with visits to the winery and vineyards. Plan this visit by making an enquiry. During wine festivals, Emma Winery offers visitors tastings of its natural wines; this offering is available during festival periods.
Traditional Dishes and Seasonal Events
The Kőtésfesztivál is held every spring at the Strekov community centre. Since 2004, it has been dedicated to preserving traditional Lenten dishes from earlier generations. At its heart is Kőtés, a traditional Hungarian Lenten dish. The festival aims to give it a more prominent place in Hungarian gastronomic culture.
The annual calendar therefore offers two distinct culinary occasions: in spring, the Kőtésfesztivál centres on a traditional dish, while in July the Strekovský vínny festival celebrates wine. If you choose one of these events as the focus of your trip, plan around the dates of the event.
Wetland and Birdlife
The protected Parížske močiare wetland also includes parts of Strekov’s cadastral area. It is the only site in Slovakia where the breeding of the very rare Moustached Warbler (Acrocephalus melanopogon) has been reliably documented. This makes the wetland a distinctive natural attraction alongside the wine-growing landscape.
The water areas, with their stands of reeds, bulrushes and sedges, also provide breeding habitat for other notable bird species. These include the Little Crake (Porzana parva), Garganey (Anas querquedula) and Little Bittern (Ixobrychus minutus). Thus, Strekov’s character is shaped not only by its vineyards but also by its wetlands and birdlife.
Pilgrimage Site and Planned Themed Trail
At the Cigléd pilgrimage site, outside Strekov’s built-up area, there is a Calvary. The Stations of the Cross there connect two chapels. Strekov is home to the Baroque All Saints Church, built in 1755 and remodelled in 1929. It is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. Check access before visiting.
The planned Strekov–Svodín Educational Trail is designed to be 9.6 kilometres long, beginning and ending at the Roman Catholic churches in Strekov and Svodín. The planned trail’s information boards will cover rare animal and plant species in the surrounding landscape, the Cigléd pilgrimage site, folk traditions, and cultural and historical monuments in Strekov and Svodín. The Central European Marian Route is also among the topics. The planned content thus brings together nature and cultural themes without losing sight of winegrowing as the defining local focus.
