Rožňava: Caves, Karst and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Rožňava
Cave tours, karst landscapes and traces of history offer different highlights for a trip to Rožňava. The caves show how diverse the landscape is; in Betliar and Rožňava, historical collections and mining take center stage. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between tour times, routes and seasonal access.
Caves and Karst Landscapes
At Ochtinská aragonitová jaskyňa, the tour covers 300 meters and takes about 30 minutes. The cave is known for the variety and richness of its aragonite formations. A parking lot is located 300 meters from the cave; from there, a gently rising path leads to the entrance area. Check access conditions before your trip.
Gombasecká jaskyňa is also located in a protected karst landscape: it lies within Slovenský kras National Park. Its tour route covers 530 meters, and the visit takes about 30 minutes. Compared with the 300-meter tour route at Ochtinská jaskyňa, the walk here is longer, while both tours are listed as taking roughly the same amount of time. The distances refer to the respective tour routes.
Domica is part of a cross-border cave complex that it forms together with Hungary’s Baradla Cave. The site’s history goes back a long way: people lived in Domica as early as 5,000 to 6,000 years ago, during the Neolithic period. Depending on the tour you choose, it may also include a boat ride on the underground Styx River. If this ride is important to your plans, confirm the option before your trip.
Access to Dobšinská ľadová jaskyňa differs from the short guided cave tours: it follows an approximately one-kilometer-long educational trail with an ascent of 130 meters. The uphill walk is listed as taking around 25 minutes. This time refers to the approach, not a cave tour. On the hiking route from Dedinky to the cave, the designated access points for the start and end are in Okres Rožňava; if planning this route, also check local public transport timetables.
As of the status checked on August 23, 2026, Krásnohorská jaskyňa was closed. Before traveling, check whether its status has changed.
Cultural History in Betliar and Rožňava
In Betliar, the manor house library preserves more than 14,000 volumes from the 15th to the 19th century in six languages. The exhibition “Residential Culture of the Nobility in the 18th and 19th Centuries” offers another way to explore the history of aristocratic living. Access may be seasonal and should be checked before your trip. Also in Betliar is an English-style park covering 57 hectares, which has been included in the list of historic gardens of the world. The library, exhibition and park each offer a distinct focus: collection, residential culture and a designed garden landscape.
In the town of Rožňava, a mining museum focuses on the region’s mining history. It is one of three specialized mining museums in Slovakia. One exhibition features mining workplaces, illustrating working conditions underground and the methods used by miners. The museum thus complements the cave experiences with a different perspective on the underground world: here, the focus is on human labor and its conditions.
Circular Route, Hike and Festival
For an active exploration, the Cyklomagistrála Slovenský kras is a marked circular route through Rožňava, Betliar and Krásnohorské Podhradie. Before setting off, check whether the route is currently marked. A hiking route from Dedinky to Dobšinská ľadová jaskyňa offers another way to include trails in your trip plans; its designated access points at the start and end are in Okres Rožňava. For this trip, possible local transport connections are a separate planning consideration, as timetables can change.
The cultural program can also shape a visit: in 2025, a food zone was part of the accompanying program at the Gemerský folklórny festival in Rejdová. This information refers to the 2025 festival program. Alongside the mining history, historical collections and caves, this offers a range of different reasons to visit, without requiring every experience to involve the same kind of visit.
When planning your stay, it is best to distinguish between the time needed for a tour and the time needed to get there. The cave tours at Ochtinská and Gombasecká are each listed as taking about 30 minutes; allow around 25 minutes for the uphill approach to Dobšinská ľadová jaskyňa. Also check seasonal access, the status of Krásnohorská jaskyňa and the availability of the Domica boat ride, if these details are important to your trip.
