Dedinky: Karst Landscape, Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Dedinky
Dedinky brings together several interests that you can weigh differently when choosing your destination: the Geravy karst plateau, the Zejmarská Gorge, the Palcmanská Maša Reservoir and the Hnilecká Cycling Route. The Roman Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary adds an architectural history dimension. For planning purposes, it is helpful to distinguish between individual hiking destinations, activities on the water and a cycling route that passes through several municipalities. This lets you consider whether nature and trails, water or architecture should shape your stay more strongly. The destinations differ in scale: the trail to the gorge has a specific starting point, while the cycling route passes through eleven municipalities.
Geravy: Karst Plateau and Chairlift
Geravy is a vast, well-preserved karst plateau in the southern Slovak Paradise. Mountain meadows, clearings and small wooded areas define the landscape, bringing together open and forested stretches. The Dedinky–Geravy chairlift connects Dedinky with the plateau and offers views of the natural landscape in this part of the Slovak Paradise. It began operating on 7 August 2023; check operating conditions before your trip. As a landscape highlight, Geravy—with its meadows, clearings and wooded areas—differs from the water activities at the reservoir.
Zejmarská Gorge and Hiking Trails
The Zejmarská Gorge is near Dedinky, is designated a national nature reserve and is the only accessible gorge in the southern Slovak Paradise. Its entrance can be reached from the junction near the hotel in Dedinky via a red-marked trail in about 20 minutes. Another hiking trail leads from Dedinky to Havrania skala. It has no ladders or rungs and is suitable for dogs. The two hiking destinations can be compared by their different features: for access to the gorge, the trail markings and approximate walking time to its entrance are relevant; for Havrania skala, it is the absence of ladders and rungs and its suitability for dogs. This lets you base your choice on the trail features that matter to your plans.
Water at Palcmanská Maša
The Palcmanská Maša Reservoir near Dedinky covers 86 hectares. Swimming is possible there; seasonal conditions and access rules may vary. Fishing is permitted, and the water is part of the trout fishing waters. If you plan to make swimming a priority, take seasonal conditions and access rules into account. Fishing is another option at the same body of water and differs from swimming conditions in that the reservoir is designated for trout fishing.
Cycling on the Hnilecká Cycling Route
The Hnilecká Cycling Route starts in Dedinky and has a second starting point in Margecany. The route is just under 70 kilometres long and passes through eleven municipalities. Its length and course give cycling a regional scope: unlike a single hiking destination, the cycling route covers several municipalities. If you are considering cycling as part of your trip, the route length and the number of municipalities it passes through provide concrete guidance. Alongside trails to named destinations, there is a cycling route with its own geographical reach.
Cultural and Historical Heritage in Dedinky
The Roman Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is a Baroque-classical church dating from 1835. Its construction date and style make it a distinct cultural and historical point of interest alongside the landscape and outdoor activities. If you also take architectural history into account when choosing your destination, the church complements the natural attractions with a historical dimension.
