Čierna Lehota lies at the end of the Štítnica Valley, below Stolica, which rises to 1,476 m. At 1,409 m, Kohút dominates the valley in the background and marks the end of the municipality and of the entire valley. Two distinct peaks are therefore central to the landscape: Stolica is higher, while Kohút dominates the end of the valley.

Mountain landscape and protected area

A blue-marked trail from Čierna Lehota leads to the two highest peaks in the Slovak Ore Mountains: Stolica at 1,476 m and Kohút at 1,409 m. The Carpathian stonecrop, a Carpathian endemic, also grows on Kohút. Wolves, brown bears and Eurasian lynx are regularly found in the Stolica Natura 2000 site.

The cadastral area of Čierna Lehota is also part of the Muránska planina–Stolica protected area. Forests cover about 88 percent of its area. Recreational activities in this protected area include hiking, cycling, caving, climbing and hang gliding. The nearby national parks of Slovak Karst, Slovak Paradise and Muránska planina offer opportunities for hiking and cycling from Čierna Lehota.

Zone A of the Stolica protected area includes plots in the cadastral area of Čierna Lehota. Its boundary follows the cadastral boundary to Kohút and continues to Stolica. Access is subject to the protection rules set out in the relevant designation.

Hiking trails and destinations

The elevations and route descriptions provide orientation between the summit destinations and longer routes. One Stolica hiking route runs from Muránska Huta via Stolica and the Pomník SNP monument to Čierna Lehota, then continues to Slavošovce. It follows well-marked hiking trails. The route therefore differs from the brief guidance provided by the blue-marked trail from Čierna Lehota to the two highest peaks.

The trail to the Pomník SNP monument leads to Čierna Lehota and joins a blue-marked hiking trail there, before the end of the village. Trail markings and conditions can change; check them before setting out. A climb to Stolica is one of the municipality’s annual cultural and social events. If you are planning your trip around it, check the specific event dates.

Cultural history in Čierna Lehota

The Pomník SNP Čierna Lehota monument stands above Čierna Lehota and commemorates the victims of the Slovak National Uprising. The municipality’s wartime heritage also includes a memorial room dedicated to the Slovak National Uprising. The monument and the memorial room have different roles: one is a place of remembrance above the municipality, while the other is a room dedicated to the uprising.

The Evangelical church in Čierna Lehota was built in 1773–1774 as a Toleration church in the Classicist style. Its architectural features include a wooden Protestant gallery running along three sides of the nave. The Classicist altar dates from the mid-19th century and features a painting of Christ blessing. The construction, gallery and altar thus tell of different chapters in the church’s history, from its origins in the late 18th century to its later furnishings.
