Sklené: Renaissance, Glass History and Trails
Accommodation in Sklené
Sklené combines Renaissance architecture and glass history with marked hiking trails and a cycling route. Buildings, former glass production and routes through the landscape give your stay several possible points of focus.
Location and Landscape
Sklené lies at the southern tip of Turčianska záhradka, at the eastern foot of the Žiar Mountains. The municipality lies between 511 and 892 metres above sea level. Beside the church stands a winter lime tree that is about 400 years old and around 20 metres tall; its trunk circumference is 635 centimetres. The condition of the tree may change. The lime tree adds a prominent natural landmark at the church to the architectural sights.
Architecture and Local History
The former judge’s house is originally a Renaissance building from the early 17th century and was altered after 1912. The Roman Catholic Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is also a Renaissance building: it was built in 1626 and 1627 on the foundations of an older Gothic structure. Inside is a Renaissance hall. The church was declared a national cultural monument in 1963.
The area around the church contains further evidence of the village’s history. The cemetery surrounding it has cast-iron crosses from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Sklené also has a chain-like colonisation settlement pattern. The settlement layout and cemetery monuments thus add further perspectives on the village to the history of individual buildings.
Glass History and Remembrance
Remains of the first glass-melting furnaces have been preserved on the Biely potok, where a glass-melting furnace still stands. Glass was produced in Sklené until 25 June 1875. These traces make former glass production a distinct focus alongside the Renaissance architecture. A memorial was unveiled at the site of the Sklené massacre in 1994.
Hiking and Cycling Routes
The hiking trails lead to various named destinations. The Ráztočno–Sklené pri Handlovej hiking trail is marked blue and is 9 kilometres long. A red-marked trail leads from Sklené to Bralová skala, where the Cesta hrdinov SNP runs. Bralová skala can be reached via forest and mountain trails by experienced hikers. A blue-marked trail leads to Sklenianske lúky.
In August 2024, the route from Sklené to Útulňa SNP Sklené was listed as 5.3 kilometres and approximately 1.5 hours. It first follows blue-marked trails and then red-marked trails; Útulňa lies directly on the red-marked Cesta hrdinov SNP. Check trail conditions and local markings before setting out, especially after storms or maintenance work.
The landscape can also be explored by bike on a dedicated route: the Remäta–Sklené cycling route passes the Horský hotel Remata recreation centre and then crosses pastures along the ridge into the municipality of Sklené. Surface conditions may change; take this into account when planning. The possible destinations and route profiles therefore differ: the hikes focus on named places such as Bralová skala and Sklenianske lúky, while the cycling route crosses the ridge pastures to Sklené.
