Čremošné at the southwestern foot of Veľká Fatra
Accommodation in Čremošné
Čremošné lies at the southwestern foot of Veľká Fatra, in a side valley of the Žarnovica stream. The municipality’s terrain ranges from hilly to mountainous. The protected natural area of Veľká Fatra has been designated a national park since 2002. Its location and terrain provide a setting for hiking, cycling and stays focused on local history.
Landscape and trails
Below and above the village are the small and large Čremošnianske lazy, grassy ridges. They offer beautiful views in every direction. A hike to the Čremošnianske lazy can begin in Čremošné. The route crosses meadows and is not demanding. If you want to explore on foot, this gives you a named starting point and a clear destination: the meadow ridges.
For cyclists, yellow-marked cycle route 8422 runs from Háj through Čremošné and the Žarnovická dolina to Kostolec. The hike leads to the Čremošnianske lazy, while the cycling route follows a route through several places and the valley to a named destination. You can choose between the two options according to what you’re looking for: a trip to the grassy ridges or a cycle route beyond Čremošné.
Local culture and history
Preserved examples of folk architecture can be seen in the village. Local traditions include Fašiangové and May celebrations, held several times a year by the local volunteer fire brigade. If you want to plan your trip around a celebration, check the announced dates in advance.
The Žarnovická dolina also has a historical connection: it commemorates the last meeting of the illegal SNR and the leadership of the illegal military centre on 27 July 1944, before the Slovak National Uprising. This commemoration adds a precisely dated chapter in the history of the uprising to the area’s architecture and local festive traditions. For visitors interested in this subject, it gives the area another historical dimension alongside its hiking and cycling routes.
Railway and farm visit
A railway line towards Banská Bystrica runs beneath Čremošné. It passes through 22 tunnels, including the 4,697 m-long Čremošniansky Tunnel. The structure is located in the cadastral territories of Čremošné, Mošovce and Dolný Harmanec and is designated a national cultural monument. Its length, route and monument status give the tunnel a distinctive place in the area’s railway history.
Syráreň Polun invites you to visit the farm and sample its products. The farm uses milk from its own sheep to make its dairy products. A visit combines a tasting with an insight into local production.
