In Kysucké Nové Mesto District, protected natural areas, traces of early settlement and living traditions sit side by side. Ľadonhora offers views from a marked ridge trail with viewpoints; in Radoľa, the castle, exhibition and educational trail introduce the history of Kysuce. Kysucké Nové Mesto adds a historic centre and a festival tradition dating back to the 17th century. You can therefore focus your trip on nature, culture or winter activities.

Natural Monuments and Trails

Ľadonhora is a protected nature reserve in Kysucké Nové Mesto District and reaches an altitude of 999 m. The mountain can be reached via a marked ridge trail with viewpoints over Malá Fatra and the surrounding area. Ochodnický prameň and Veľké Ostré are also natural monuments in the district. These three names refer to different protected natural sites; they do not imply any specific information about water quality or access.

For a walk with a historical focus, consider the educational and history trail in Radoľa. It opened in 2014, is about 4 km long and passes places associated with the earliest settlement of the area. Signposts mark the route, while information panels explain the historical features of each location. The approximate length gives you a guide for planning, without specifying a walking time.

Alternatively, the route through the Kysucká vrchovina can be divided into several shorter sections, each of which can end in one of the neighbouring valleys. The two routes therefore offer different approaches to planning: the educational and history trail has an approximate total length, while the Kysucká vrchovina route focuses on dividing the journey into shorter sections.

Radoľa: Castle and Archaeological History

Radoľa Castle is a Renaissance-style noble residence; it was probably originally protected by a defensive wall. The castle houses the permanent archaeological and historical exhibition “The Early History of Kysuce”. It has been open there since 1983 and was partially redesigned in 2002. The exhibits include artefacts dating from the Palaeolithic to the Roman period.

Koscelisko, an archaeological site, is also located near Radoľa. The foundations of a masonry church that existed from approximately 1270 to 1429 were uncovered there. The history of settlement on the terrace goes back even further: evidence shows that people lived there 3,000 to 4,000 years ago. The castle, exhibition and archaeological site offer different perspectives on the history of the area.

Historic Centre and Local Traditions

The historic centre of Kysucké Nové Mesto is the only preserved historic complex in Kysuce. In the middle of the historic square, lined with arcades, stands a sandstone statue of Saint John of Nepomuk dating from 1761. The Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary also tells a story of a long construction history: it originated as a chapel begun in 1738, was extended from 1801 and completed in 1817.

Local customs include the Jakubovské hody, a tradition that has continued since 1666. If you want to plan your trip around this festival, check the dates for the relevant year. Scientific topics take centre stage at Kysucká hvezdáreň: a variety of events for a broad audience cover astronomy and related natural sciences and technology.

At the Vianočné trhy in Kysucké Nové Mesto, refreshments such as punch or mead are available to the public. If the market is a key reason for your trip, check the dates for your travel year. In winter, the Snowsun Vadičov ski centre in Horný Vadičov offers skiing and night skiing. Facilities include a children’s park and a ski school; experienced instructors help beginners as well as those who want to improve their skiing technique. For night skiing and lessons, it is advisable to check the current times.
