Landscape and Character of Zázrivá

The municipal area of Zázrivá extends into several mountain ranges of the Fatra-Tatra area and the Central Beskids: Malá Fatra, Kysucká vrchovina and Oravská Magura. The landscape includes numerous meadows, pastures, waterfalls, ponds and streams. They are mostly surrounded by spruce and beech forests, as well as krummholz. The themes for a stay here therefore combine nature, outdoor activities and local customs.

Hiking, Cycling and Winter Sports

The two-kilometre nature trail in Zázrivá-Dolina starts at the entrance to the rescue station. The circular route leads back to the station, with a shelter and benches along the way. At a moderate pace, it takes about an hour to walk; check trail conditions locally. Eight information boards cover the activities of the rescue station and eco-centre, regional animals and plants, birds of prey, Zázrivá, Malá Fatra National Park, local trees, and nature conservation and tourism.

A longer hiking option runs from Zázrivá via Medzirozsutce to Veľký Rozsutec. The stated guide time for this route is 3 hours and 20 minutes; the actual duration may vary. A cycling route also passes through the village: the 20-kilometre Terchová–Zázrivá–Hoľa route goes through Zázrivá. Surface and conditions may vary. The two routes therefore differ not only in mode of transport, but also in their stated length or duration.

The Kozinec ski centre is located in Zázrivá-Havrania and has numerous slopes that are better suited to experienced skiers. Dolná Plešivá is another ski centre right in Zázrivá. Ski centre operations are seasonal; conditions at Kozinec may also change. If skiing is part of your travel plans, check operating status for your chosen dates.

Nature and Conservation

The rescue station in Zázrivá rescues injured, weakened or otherwise impaired animals from across Slovakia, particularly birds. Zázrivá’s eco-garden features various plant and tree species, a wetland pond, nesting boxes and watering stations. There are also areas for insects and reptiles. The nature trail’s topics thus range from animal rescue to nature conservation and tourism.

Cheese, Customs and Architecture

Zázrivský korbáčik is traditionally made almost exclusively by hand: curd cheese is steamed in hot water, pulled into strands and then braided into a korbáčik. According to tradition, this speciality has been made in Zázrivá since the second half of the 19th century. At Salaš Zázrivá, visitors can watch a demonstration of the artisanal production of fresh and smoked sheep’s cheese.

Zázrivské dni also celebrates the craft of cheese-making. The festival takes place in late July and includes a cultural programme, korbáčik-making competitions, farmsteads, artisans, a fair with people in traditional dress and a parade. Dates and programmes vary from year to year. At Salaš Syrex, visitors can pet the horses all year round.

Zázrivá’s sights include wooden houses. The Church of the Virgin Mary dates from 1928. The range of local attractions therefore extends from traditional crafts to architecture.
