Dolný Kubín lies in the southwest of the Orava Highlands, on the border with Orava Magura. The Orava River flows through the town, dividing it into two parts. This geographical location is part of the town’s character; its history can be explored through specific buildings, collections and cultural institutions.

Historic Town Centre and Architectural History

Hviezdoslav Square is Dolný Kubín’s most important medieval urban monument. Several Renaissance and Baroque burgher houses line the square. The Church of St. Catherine of Alexandria is the town’s oldest cultural and historical monument. Its tower dates from the 14th century; the late Gothic altar was created at the beginning of the 16th century, and the Renaissance epitaph of the Zmeškalovci family dates to 1622. These dates show that the tower, altar and epitaph come from different historical periods.

Another example of historic architecture is Župný dom, dating from the last third of the 17th century. The building houses the Orava Gallery and its permanent exhibitions. They showcase 20th-century Slovak visual art, Orava woodcarver Štefan Siváň, and a selection of traditional folk art.

Literature, Collections and Remembrance

The Hviezdoslav Museum is considered Slovakia’s oldest literary museum. Alongside the book collections of Vavrinec Čaplovič, it presents the life and work of poet Pavol Országh Hviezdoslav. The Čaplovič Library offers a public exhibition about Čaplovič as a scholar and private book collector, as well as the fields of knowledge represented in his historical collection. These include manuscripts, incunabula dating from before 1500, and valuable art and map collections from the historic library holdings.

The T. H. Florin memorial room in Florin House has been open to the public since 1997. It contains the original furnishings, poetry collections, personal belongings and biographical information. Florin House is also currently used for temporary exhibitions on social sciences and natural history, prepared by the P. O. Hviezdoslav Orava Museum. The content of these exhibitions may change.

Nature Trail and Leisure Activities in Kuzmínovo

The Kuzmínovo nature trail starts at the Dolný Kubín Jewish Cemetery near the historic centre. The cemetery is open to the public on request. From the cemetery, the path follows the access road to the Kuzmínovo Hut and then leads to two shelters by the cross-country ski trails. Eight information panels cover Dolný Kubín, the Kuzmínovo area and the animals, medicinal plants and mushrooms found there. There are also two interactive panels for children.

The Kuzmínovo recreation centre has illuminated cross-country and downhill ski slopes, located 400 metres from Dolný Kubín’s historic square. The town also has a year-round aquapark with pools, a wild-water river, whirlpools, slides and a sauna world. The complex also includes a spacious fitness centre and a massage and rehabilitation centre. Check the aquapark’s current operating status before your trip.
