Vyšný Kubín lies on the northwestern slope of the Chočské vrchy. The landscape and cultural history sit side by side: topics range from striking rock formations to a church with Late Gothic foundations, literary memorial sites and archaeological reconstructions. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether to focus on the landscape, architectural history, literature or archaeological displays. This thematic focus can also be a useful starting point when choosing a hotel.

Rock Landscapes and Archaeological Traces

The protected site of Ostrá skala and Tupá skala includes striking rock formations and several smaller caves. Both rocks are also archaeological sites with remains of fortified hillforts. Thus, natural formations and traces of earlier fortifications offer two different ways of interpreting the same rocks.

From Tupá skala, the view stretches across almost the entire lower Orava region. This broad panorama complements the specific descriptions of the rock formations and caves. The landscape here is therefore about both distinctive individual features and views across the lower Orava region.

Church, Manor Houses and Archaeopark

The Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Trinity is a single-nave sacred building on 15th-century Late Gothic foundations. The main altar features a statue of the Holy Trinity, also from the 15th century. The term “single-nave” describes the basic type of building; the dates of the foundations and the statue refer to two distinct elements. This allows the building’s history and its furnishings to be considered separately, without assigning the entire building a blanket 15th-century date.

The Arpádovský Manor House houses a permanent exhibition on local history, P. O. Hviezdoslav and other personalities associated with Vyšný Kubín. The exhibition thus brings together local and literary history. If you plan a visit, check the visiting arrangements locally.

A guided tour of Kaštieľ Kubínyi includes visits to both the Renaissance and Baroque sections. In suitable weather, the tour also includes a walk through the English park. Comparing the two sections of the building is part of the tour; the park walk is explicitly weather-dependent.

The Mokrý kút Archaeopark features reconstructed archaeological architecture and settlement structures. It also includes replicas of archaeological objects from specific periods of the archaeological cultures represented in the region. Spatial reconstructions and individual objects thus form two distinct parts of the display. The Archaeopark can be visited year-round by prior telephone arrangement; make the specific arrangements by phone before your visit.

Literary Memorial Sites

Each literary memorial site highlights a different aspect. The “Priadka” monument is dedicated to the mother of P. O. Hviezdoslav. A monument in the town centre marks the site where the poet’s birthplace once stood. A memorial plaque bearing the inscription “House of Youth of Margita Figuli” marks the house where the writer spent part of her life. These connections range from a dedication and a former birthplace site to a biographical association with a house.
